The third stage of the International Week Coppi and Bartali was won by Tommaso Dati. The 23-year-old Tuscan rider from Team Ukyo triumphed at the end of the 175 kilometers of "Brescia roads" that today engaged the peloton from Erbusco to Iseo, leaving behind Swiss rider Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) and Diego Ulissi (XDS Astana), still on the podium in second and third position, as already happened in Barolo in the opening stage of the G.S. Emilia race. Dati, in his first year with the Japanese-based Continental team directed by Alberto Volpi, thus celebrates his first professional victory.
New change at the top of the general classification with Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) who, after today's stage, takes the leader's jersey from D'Aiuto.
THE STAGE - Immediately after the start from Erbusco, attacks began and some riders gained an advantage, caught a few kilometers later by a second group. At the tenth kilometer of the race, a group of seven brave riders formed: Luca Colnaghi (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), Nicholas Travella (Biesse - Carrera - Premac), Will Harding (Mg.K Vis Costruzioni e Ambiente), Giosuè Epis (Petrolike), Mirko Bozzola (S.C. Padovani Polo Cherry Bank), Ben Granger (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali) and Jesper Stiansen (Tudor Pro Cycling). The peloton of the general classification riders immediately gave them free rein and the gap increased rapidly.
The first hour of racing flew by at over 46 KM/h and the advantage of the seven attackers remained above 3 minutes for a long time. Continuing on the local circuit, the breakaway riders maintained a wide advantage over the group but, as soon as they exited the circuit to head towards the start of the Passo Tre Termini climb, the peloton surged forward, reducing the gap to just one minute.
On the first slopes of Passo Tre Termini, Ben Granger (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali) and Jesper Stiansen (Tudor Pro Cycling) remained in the lead together, while their former breakaway companions lost ground; shortly after, the British rider also had to contend with fatigue while the young Tudor rider continued alone for a short while.
The peloton regrouped when thirty kilometers remained to the finish line and about seven to the summit of Passo Tre Termini, the only climb of the day. The first category slopes also put in difficulty the general classification leader Filippo d'Aiuto (General Store essegibi Fratelli Curia) while up front the battle exploded and Alessandro Verre (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort) crested the KOM ahead of Peter Øxenberg and Andrew August, both from INEOS Grenadiers.
Back on flat terrain, the group continued together. Two kilometers from the finish line, former general classification leader Axel Laurance (INEOS Grenadiers) was sidelined by a puncture, dropping out of contention for the final sprint that rewarded Dati.
The International Week Coppi and Bartali continues tomorrow with the fourth stage: 159 kilometers from Ponte di Piave to Valdobbiadene.
