Jonas Vingegaard is one of the big names in the peloton and for this reason he speaks up when things aren't working properly. The Danish champion has spoken multiple times about safety throughout his career and at Paris-Nice, the Visma-Lease a Bike champion spoke out once again. He was extremely critical of the Aso organizers over the condition of the roads in the first stage: "Sometimes it's like banging your head against a wall. But I would say that in one way or another I feel the responsibility to make sure things improve in cycling. If we don't say anything, nothing will happen. I want to be a leader of the peloton not only for my results but also for safety. The roads in the first stage were terrible and constantly had deviations left and right. There were many potholes and the final descent wasn't up to the standard of a WorldTour race".
Yesterday Vingegaard returned to the subject and acknowledged that organizers are not the only ones responsible for ensuring the race is conducted safely: "It's a matter of reciprocity. It's clear that we riders also have enormous responsibility, but the same goes for the organizers. We can't just point the finger at everyone else. Yesterday in the peloton there was a lot of talk about how people behave. In general, we need to have more mutual respect in the peloton".
During his career, the Danish rider suffered a serious injury at the Tour of the Basque Country in 2024: his criticism has concerned not only the condition of the roads, but also the fact that television crews and spectators were too close to the riders, the lack of radio communications, and the management of bad weather.
In response to Vingegaard's words, the Aso organizers (the same ones behind the Tour de France and Paris-Nice) gave a brief reply: "We are working closely with the CPA (the riders' union, ed.), with the three riders' representatives appointed by the CPA for Paris-Nice and with the commissaires, and we have not received any negative feedback".
