Glory comes to Israeli Itamar Einhorn in Musanze, who claims his second personal success and the fourth for his team: the sixth stage of the Tour du Rwanda ends with a sprint among a compact group, as expected. Completing the success for Nsn is the second place of British rider Finlay Tarling, while third place went to Spanish rider Hodei Munoz of Soudal Quick Step Devo. The race leader remains unchanged, German rider Kretshky, also from Nsn, increasingly dominant. In the role of breakaway riders, Rwandan Uwiduhaye and Brazilian Rossi gave at least some trouble to those chasing, before the Benediction rider lost contact. The group accelerated and reduced the gap during the climb (third category) of Kinigi, all together 4 km from the finish. There were only 82 km to cover, climbing up from Lake Kivu towards the locality that serves as a hub for those visiting the gorillas (Volcanoes National Park).
RACE REPORT. Just 3 km after the start, Thompson (Lotto) and Cisneros (Soudal) are the first to make a move, quickly caught. Subsequently, under light rain, the Mexican tries again. With the passage of the finish line at km 60, there is the circuit including the Kinigi climb, nothing special (7.8 km at 4.3% average gradient), offering possible surprises.
But let's go in order: applause for local rider Uwiduhaye (Benediction) who builds up 15 seconds of advantage, then at km 15 three riders go on reconnaissance and they are notable names such as Brazilian Ribeiro (Soudal), Dutch rider Zomermaand (Picnic) and Araya (Eritrea).
Van Gils (Lotto), Da Silva (Localiza) and Mattheis (Bike Aid) join the breakaway leaders: they lend support, or at least try to, and indeed the climb goes to Heidemann, ahead of Marriage and Vidal. Uwiduhaye returns to the story, going solo, while Nsn protects the yellow jersey wearer Kretshky, also targeting the day's victory. When Brazilian Rossi breaks away from the peloton and reaches Uwiduhaye, Musanze is already visible in the distance.
At km 50 the leading duo has 46 seconds over the chasers and effectively creates the main breakaway of the stage. The alarm sounds for the group when, 25 km from the finish, the local hero and Rossi have 1 minute to defend. The Brazilian remains alone, his fate seemingly sealed during the climb towards the summit (altitude of 2200 meters), nevertheless passed in first position by Localiza rider Meoooo. Compact group less than 5 km from the finish line, located in the bustling main avenue. Einhorn interprets the sprint perfectly and leaves no chance for his rivals.
