Israeli rider Itamar Einhorn of NSN Cycling Team takes the first yellow jersey of the Tour du Rwanda: the verdict comes down to a decisive sprint. The 176 km route from Rukomo to Rwamagana begins in a kind of natural amphitheater where spectators crowd against barriers strategically positioned on the reddish terrain. Barely has race director Philippe Coillou lowered the flag when the day's breakaway gets underway, composed of Da Silva (Localiza), Heidemann (Rembe), Teweldbrhan (May Stars), Nkundebera (Rwanda), Uwiduhaye (Bénédiction).
The peloton lets them go and the script unfolds as expected, with the usual—at these latitudes—unbroken line of spectators along the roadside, among whom one likes to imagine future riders. The first categorized climb is won by number 102. Two riders remain at the front for many kilometers in a courageous tandem made up of Da Silva, the well-known former mountain biker Avancini, an authority in cross-country racing, and German Miguel Heidemann, who proves to be very active. They work together without worrying about the gap closing to the main group. The peloton catches up and Israeli rider Itamar Einhorn of NSN Cycling Team takes a decisive sprint victory. Second place goes to young Spanish rider Hodei Muniz (Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team) and third to Mewael, the brother of Biniam Girmay, of Istanbul Team.
