Of the three grand tours, only the Tour de France route is currently known, while anticipation builds for the Giro d'Italia route. The pink race will be unveiled on December 1st, and next year we might see both Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard at the start. The Dane has already said he would like to race the Giro, but the decision will be made with the team, while Evenepoel last Saturday said he is very interested in the Italian race.
Before leaving for Spain, where he will begin his preparation, Evenepoel received his fifth Crystal Bike in Belgium, matching Johan Museeuw's record, and made interesting statements about a potential Giro participation.
The topic of his schedule was discussed during the awards ceremony, and the Belgian noted that a 40 km time trial at the Giro could be very interesting for a rider like him.
"It would be a three-quarter hour effort and would be very suitable for a rider like me. But first, we want to wait for the official presentation of the Giro d'Italia route".
Some rumors have already emerged about the pink race, but what Evenepoel most wants to know is the detail of the time trial stages where he could make a difference and gain significant time on his rivals ahead of the final week's climbs. These factors could lead the Belgian to race in Italy next May.
"There are several rumors saying the last week will be very difficult. But it wouldn't be bad to have a second opportunity in this race".
The Belgian, who has moved to Red Bull - Bora Hansgrohe, has already participated twice in the Giro. The first time in 2021, upon returning to the peloton after his 2020 crash at the Giro di Lombardia: Remco withdrew on the eighteenth stage. His second time was in 2023, when he did not restart after the Cesena time trial, announcing his positive COVID test. In that edition of the race, Evenepoel had won both time trial stages, the first on the Costa dei Trabocchi, where he wore the pink jersey, over a 19.6-kilometer route, and then in Cesena over a 35 km distance.
Evenepoel has just returned from his vacation in South Africa and revealed he hasn't touched a bike for 4 weeks. Remco is relaxed and can now start focusing seriously on his new season. "I was four weeks without a bicycle and when I started again, my legs were extremely heavy. But I know the situation will improve day by day. Our vacation in South Africa was unforgettable, and we even went on a safari. But now it's time to concentrate and prepare for a new season. I just hope I don't have any unexpected issues along the way".
