Today he is considered one of the promises of Italian cycling, yet until a few years ago Roberto Capello played soccer and the bike was just a hobby to follow with his father during free time. Then in 2022 he chose to take a new path, entering the junior category, getting first results and starting to dream. "Certainly getting immediate results helped me a lot because it made me continue, if I hadn't been able to finish races I wouldn't have gone on" Roberto tells us with absolute frankness, and we must say that his choice was more than right. This year he will be among the protagonists of the Tuttobici Oscar Night to collect the UAE Emirates Grand Prix as the best Italian junior of the year.
Roberto Capello's 2025 was rich in results, within the Team Grenke Auto he not only confirmed his value but was also able to improve. Certainly joining a foreign team meant a lot, a new environment gave him the stimulus to take the next step, but what was decisive was especially his different approach to racing.
"I believe that the season just concluded was the best of my career, both in terms of results and personal satisfaction. Entering a new team helped me a lot to change my way of racing, which was actually my big problem; before I had difficulties staying in the group, I was never at the front and so I could never express myself at my best. The foreign mentality is completely different from the Italian one, they don't wait for other teams to take responsibility for an action, but are the first to attack and this makes a big difference. Fortunately, I found myself in a team with other strong guys where good results were always achieved and this precisely spurred me to give even more, the mentality was not just about being at the start of a race, but about being the best," Roberto explains, who is meanwhile discovering himself as a rider. Until last year he would have described himself as a climber, but now he sees himself more as a complete athlete ready to find his space in the group.
It was a season of victories in Italy and beyond, but above all the opportunity to get a real taste of cycling and gain experience throughout Europe. Among the many race days, the one Roberto holds most dear is winning European silver, a special result that came after a period when he was not satisfied with his performances.
"Before leaving for the Europeans and World Championships, I had raced the Giro della Lunigiana and was really unhappy with my performance, I couldn't find the right condition, I wasn't satisfied. Then once I left with the National Team everything changed, I believe it was a mix of factors, both the right environment and the result of previous months of work. With the Europeans I reached a beautiful milestone. The silver is a splendid result especially for how I raced, I tried until the end and gave everything," continues Roberto, who meanwhile dreams of being able to wear the blue jersey again and one day be at the start of the Giro d'Italia. The pink race is his favorite, the first he watched on television and roadside when he was a child; cycling was not yet his sport yet somehow he dreamed of being part of that group of boys on bicycles.
The 2025 season has just concluded, but Roberto already has his eyes on 2026. From next year, the eighteen-year-old from Piedmont will wear the colors of Ef Education Aevolo with whom he signed a two-year contract with a view to then moving to the professionals. These days he is in Girona for a first retreat with the team and between meetings with sponsors, sports directors and teammates, he is taking his first steps in this new reality where he will also have the opportunity to come into contact with the athletes of the first team. The calendar has not yet been defined, but the objectives are more than clear: try to replicate what was done among juniors and above all continue to improve.
