Jeronimo Calderon is the new promise of Colombian cycling. This is according to Gabriel Jaime Vélez, the talent scout who gave him the opportunity to develop his skills on a bicycle and is now his coach at Team Sisteccrédito. At 18, Calderon is establishing himself as one of the best Colombian riders in his category, and even at an international level. His performances against older athletes are equally impressive, to the point that he has quickly earned the respect of the group.
Just two years ago, this young man from Copacabana, in northern Antioquia, was competing in roller skating, a discipline he practiced for six years, winning a departmental medal (with eight golds) and reaching the top ten nationally. Now he is the junior Pan American champion in time trial and individual pursuit on the track, titles he won in Punta del Este, Uruguay. At the recent World Championships in Kigali, he finished 14th in the time trial and 19th in the road race.
From his first races, and despite being a beginner in his second year with juniors, he began to outperform much more experienced riders. Calderon has demonstrated natural talent from his first competitions. He performs well in time trials, handles mountains well, and is truly an all-around rider. According to Velez, this young man has an enormous future. And soon we'll see him racing in Europe. He is disciplined, responsible, knows how to listen, and is always in contact with his mentor. He also has the support of a good family and a strong ambition to reach great milestones.
Jeronimo is the son of Maritza Palacio, a housewife, and Felipe Calderon, also a former roller skater and mountain bike cyclist, who now owns a spice shop in the Bello market. His other son, Juan José, 16, was a Pan American roller skating champion and is currently training with the Antioquia track cycling team.
Calderon's 2025 has been characterized by success in the Colombian time trial championship and Pan American time trial championships. Last year, he won a stage at the Clásica de Rionegro, finished second in the individual time trial at the Bolivarian Youth Games in Bolivia, won a stage at the Vuelta del Porvenir, and was crowned champion of the Youth National Games.
