The Union Cycliste Internationale announces that Italian rider Giovanni Carboni has been provisionally suspended in compliance with UCI anti-doping rules, due to unexplainable anomalies in his athlete biological passport in 2024.
The UCI will not comment further while the proceedings are ongoing.
The Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) is an individual electronic register for each cyclist, where all anti-doping test results collected under the ABP program during a specific period are recorded. The International Testing Agency (ITA), the independent body to which UCI has delegated its anti-doping program while maintaining responsibility for result management and pursuing anti-doping rule violations, manages the ABP program in collaboration with the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU) in Lausanne, Switzerland (the Lausanne APMU is associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency accredited Laboratory in Lausanne). Athletes' biological cases are pursued based on the opinion of an independent expert group from the APMU.
Giovanni Carboni is currently with Unibet Tietema Rockets, while last year he rode for Team Ukyo.
Immediate reaction from the Unibet Tietema Rocket team: "Today we were informed about a potential anti-doping regulation violation by our rider Giovanni Carboni, in a period prior to his arrival in our team. We have suspended the rider with immediate effect. As members of the MPCC (Movement for Credible Cycling), we support clean sport and are ready to cooperate with the authorities involved in the investigation. Additionally, we have initiated an internal investigation. We are shocked by this news, which goes against our principles and values. We remain convinced of the importance of maximum transparency and remain steadfast supporters of clean sport".
