Italian cycling mourns another of its golden men: Antonio "Toni" Bailetti has passed away, Olympic champion at the Rome 1960 Games in the 100 km team event alongside Ottavio Cogliati, Giacomo Fornoni, and Livio Trapè. Born in Bosco di Nanto on September 29, 1937, he turned professional after his Olympic gold, winning two stages at the Giro d'Italia and an equal number at the Tour de France.
In the top category, he raced for Bianchi, Carpano/Sanson, Salvarani, and Faema. He achieved fifteen victories: in addition to stages at Giro and Tour de France, he won a stage at the 1961 Ciclomotoristico Grand Prix, three stages at the Tour of Sardinia, and the 1966 Laigueglia Trophy. He was also an Italian national rider in the road race at the 1962 World Championships in Salò. He prematurely ended his career in 1969 following an accident at the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan.
