At the top of Farrapona, after 135 kilometers in the fourteenth stage of Vuelta Espana, UAE Team Emirates celebrates again. Today, Spanish rider Marc Soler claimed victory returning to triumph on Spanish roads, finishing 39" ahead of red jersey Vingegaard who in the final meters overtook Almeida and Hindley; Austrian Gall finished fifth, a few seconds ahead of Giulio Pellizzari, who was sixth after great work for Hindley.
THE STAGE - After a very fast start with numerous attacks, twenty-two riders broke away: Mikkel Bjerg and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates - XRG), Victor Campenaerts (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Andrea Bagioli and Carlos Verona (Lidl - Trek), Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda (Movistar Team), Nico Denz and Tim van Dijke (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), Gianmarco Garofoli (Soudal Quick-Step), James Shaw (EF Education - EasyPost), Bruno Armirail, Jordan Labrosse, Léo Bisiaux and Johannes Staune-Mittet (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team), Finlay Pickering (Bahrain - Victorious), Fausto Masnada (XDS Astana Team), Pierre Thierry (Arkéa - B&B Hotels), Sergio Samitier and Jesús Herrada (Cofidis), Dion Smith (Intermarchè - Wanty), Kevin Vermaerke (Team Picnic PostNL) and Jan Hirt (Israel - Premier Tech). Later, Xabier Mikel Azparren (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) joined the breakaway, while a puncture forced Campenaerts to chase after changing bikes twice: the Visma Lease a Bike rider managed to rejoin the breakaway along with Gijs Leemreize (Team Picnic PostNL).
The breakaway thus became twenty-four riders and at the first mountain point of the day, at Alto de Tenebredo, Marc Soler beat Gianmarco Garofoli and Johannes Staune-Mittet with the peloton 5'00" behind. At the Entragu Intermediate Sprint, Dion Smith (Intermarchè - Wanty) crossed first, ahead of Bagioli and Bjerg.
A few kilometers later, the climb to the San Lorenzo mountain point began, and on the tricky slopes, Garofoli and then Bagioli attempted attacks: the two Italians thinned out the leading group, and then with a decisive move, James Shaw took the right margin to cross solo and then descend at full speed. However, the British EF rider's attack ended at the foot of Alto de la Farrapona when Soler attacked. The Spaniard was followed by young Norwegian Johannes Staune-Mittet and then Finlay Pickering, who did not threaten his solo escape to victory.
Meanwhile, in the group of overall contenders, the battle began: first the pace set by Ayuso and then the great work of Pellizzari thinned the group, leaving only Vingegaard, Almeida, and Hindley to fight for the General Classification. Still looking down on everyone is the Danish Visma Lease a Bike rider, who now holds a 48" lead over Almeida, 2'38" over Pidcock, and 3'10" over Jai Hindley.
Tomorrow, the Spanish race will live its fifteenth chapter: the route goes from Veiga/Vegadeo to Monforte de Lemos.
