The Vuelta of Spain has restarted for the second week of the race, and the success in the tenth stage went to Jay Vine, who conquered the finish line at Llarra Belagua alone. For the Australian, this is the fourth victory in the Spanish race after his success in the sixth stage and two victories won in 2022. Vine crossed the finish line first, with Pablo Castrillo arriving second 35" behind, while Javier Romo came in third at 1'04". Vingegaard arrived with the group of best riders together with Ciccone, Pidcock, and Almeida at 1'05": thanks to today's result, the Dane has reclaimed the red jersey as race leader.
"Today was definitely a difficult day and I didn't think I could win," Vine said after the race. "I tried a couple of times, I was alone for I don't know how long, maybe five kilometers or something like that. I thought maybe I should stop and told myself: tomorrow is a very technical stage for the general classification, and perhaps I should save energy to help Joao".
Vine was convincing himself that the victory would not be his and to make the final decision he decided to ask the support car for advice. "I asked the support car through the radio and they told me: no, Jay, we want you to try again one or two more times in the decisive moments. Then the guys also told me to try and resist a bit longer, and Joao told me that everyone was at their limit and to continue".
Jay Vine held on and went forward towards his second victory in this Vuelta. Now UAE Emirates has a total of 4 victories in 10 race days, and in the general classification, Almeida is third at 38", while in the climber's classification, Vine maintains the lead.
"Today was one of the most difficult days for me, both mentally and physically. At one point, I even realized I had no more water bottles and had used up all my gels, I had burned so many carbohydrates. It was incredibly difficult to start that last climb and then I had to try to think about how I would win in the end. If before this day I was satisfied with our Vuelta, now I can say I am completely satisfied, but there is still a long way to go".
