The second day of the Vuelta in Spain, finishing in Limone Piemonte, delivered one of the most surreal scenes of the season. There was a crash in a roundabout that sent almost the entire Visma-Lease a Bike team to the ground, including Jonas Vingegaard. But it's the French rider Axel Zingle who will remember this day for a long time, because in a short time he dislocated his shoulder twice and someone stole his bike while he was in the ambulance.
"Nothing serious, but unfortunately I dislocated my shoulder. We had to reposition it before I could restart," the Frenchman explained. "Then something quite curious happened: I tried to grab some gel and dislocated my shoulder again. So I had to stop, and there was a guy who didn't speak much English, but I gave him my bike while I got into the ambulance to fix my shoulder."
There are helicopter images showing Zingle stopping due to shoulder pain and handing his bike to someone by the roadside, before getting into the ambulance. "When I got out of the ambulance, my bike was gone. I had to wait 5-10 minutes for another one to arrive. That person apparently ran away with my bike, so I got a bit angry, but in the end, that's how it went."
When the images showed Axel Zingle getting off his bike in pain and climbing into the ambulance, it was actually thought he would withdraw, but instead, for a second time, he managed to fix his shoulder and restart.
"I thought I wouldn't get back on the bike, because hurting your shoulder twice in a row is not something that happens often. Fortunately, the most important thing is that I managed to continue. As for Jonas, apparently he doesn't seem to have any aftermath from the fall, so completing such a second stage and then winning is a nice thing. We managed to overcome the difficulties, Jonas won, I'm fine, so... all in all, it was a good day."
