The International Cycling Union has suspended enduro cyclist Edgar Carballo González for sexual harassment. The Ethics Commission, in the action against Carballo, established that non-consensual sexual acts towards his teammate Ares Masip violated her dignity.
The Ethics Commission of the International Cycling Union, an independent body from the Federation's administration, decided to sanction the Spanish cyclist for one year, highlighting guilt for sexual harassment. The complaint was filed by Ares Masip on the UCI's reserved platform, UCI SpeakUp, through which the cyclist reported a sexual incident that occurred in her camper during the 2023 Enduro World Cup in Leogang, Austria.
Although cyclist Ares Masip had not mentioned the name of her alleged aggressor, the investigations continued and led to Edgar Carballo González.
The cyclist from Tenerife, according to the UCI's reconstruction, allegedly undressed, immobilized his teammate, and applied pressure through words that clearly indicated his intentions. It also seems that heavy words like "rape" were used during those moments. From the reconstruction, it is clear that Ares Masip was not consenting and had repeatedly said she did not want to have any sexual relations with Edgar Carballo González. The complaint was filed through the reserved UCI SpeakUp platform, created in 2021 and used to report anonymously acts that go against UCI rules, as Masip did, who subsequently chose to make the perpetrator's name public by sharing her experience on social media and describing the suspension as a "small victory".
The cyclist on social media had explained what happened in her camper, without publicly revealing her aggressor's name. On the athlete's social channels, one could read: "He covered my mouth, grabbed my arms and kept telling me he would rape me while trying to undress me". After the story was published, another complaint emerged where the aggressor was the same as Ares Masip's.
The UCI commission, at the end of the investigations, which included listening to various witnesses besides the parties involved, concluded that the non-consensual sexual acts reported by Masip violated her dignity and constitute sexual harassment, going against articles 6.4 (protection of physical and mental integrity) and 2.3 (sexual harassment) of the UCI Ethical Code and condemning Edgar Carballo to stay away from competitions for at least one year.
The UCI then reiterated its commitment to fighting against all forms of violence and abuse, reminding that the SpeakUp platform is always active and can be used anonymously to report any act that violates the International Cycling Union's rules.
