Double success for Eduard Prades at the Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen. The forty-one-year-old Iberian rider from VC Fukuoka, who started this morning from Maron Genteng as second in the general classification, turned the fortunes of the short 2.2 Indonesian stage race around by winning on the uphill finish of the Ijen volcano ahead of Dutchman Adne van Engelen (Terengganu Cycling Team) and in doing so snatching the leadership in the standings from Dutchman Jeroen Meijers (Victoria Sports Pro Cycling).
For the veteran Spanish rider, formerly with Ukyo, who first won on the roads of the Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen ten years ago, this brought his second and third triumph of the season (both in 2.2 races) and victories number 14 and 15 of his career, all of which, like the previous ones, were conquered in Asia, a continent where the native of Alcanar has found his promised land for several years now.
Italy, victorious in the event eight years ago with the late Davide Rebellin, applauded the umpteenth podium of the day from Swatt Club, which, after Oliver Knudsen's 3rd place on Monday, Francesco Carollo's 1st in the second stage and Nicolò Pettiti's 2nd place yesterday, finished third in today's queen stage with the latter.
This placement allowed the 2002-born rider from Savigliano to close the Indonesian race in third place overall behind Prades and van Engelen (and ahead of his teammate Lorenzo Ginestra, 4th) and, at the same time, take home the polka dot jersey for best climber.
The trip thus closes more than positively for the team of Carlo Beretta, which once again managed to race as a protagonist in every stage, bringing home 12 top ten finishes, the sixth victory of the year, and, by extension, a number of UCI points that would virtually place them among the top 65 teams in the ranking (where they do not feature as an elite team registered as a club), ahead of teams like the Wagner Bazin WB ProTeam, a result that further confirms the quality of the work that the Swatt men have done and are doing in these months.
