On France's national holiday, the Tour speaks English: the British rider Simon Yates conquered the victory in the tenth stage - the Ennezat-Le Mont-Dore (Puy de Sancy) of 165.3 km - while the Irish rider Ben Healy won the yellow jersey at the end of a truly spectacular stage. The 32-year-old from Visma Lease a Bike crossed the finish line with his arms raised, distancing Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers), second with a 9" gap, and Ben Healy, third at the finish line. The EF Education - EasyPost athlete, already a stage winner in Vire Normandie, now leads the overall classification with a 29" lead over Pogacar and 1'29" over Evenepoel.
THE STAGE - Immediately after the start from Ennezat, with some accelerations and initial climbs that thinned out the group and distanced the sprinters, a breakaway of about thirty riders formed: Victor Campenaerts, Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike), Valentin Paret Peintre, Ilan van Wilder (Soudal-Quick Step), Ben Healy, Neilson Powless, Alex Baudin, Harry Sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers), Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), Julian Alaphilippe, Michael Storer (Tudor), Ben O'Connor, Luke Plapp, Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla), Raul Garcia Pierna (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Ivan Romeo, Pablo Castrillo (Movistar Team), Bruno Armirail, Aurélien Paret Peintre (Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale), Clément Champoussin, Simone Velasco (XDS-Astana), Steff Cras (TotalEnergies), Michael Woods, Joe Blackmore and Alexey Lutsenko (Israel-Premier Tech) and Anders Johannessen (Uno-X). This action characterized the entire stage with Lenny Martinez being the true protagonist during the many mountain points of the day.
As expected, as the kilometers and climbs passed, fatigue set in and gradually most of the early breakaway riders lost ground, being caught by the peloton where UAE Team Emirates riders set the pace of the chase.
Just under eighty kilometers from the finish, Radiotour announced that the breakaway advantage put Ben Healy in the virtual overall lead, and from that moment the Irishman, along with his teammates, worked to gain as much advantage as possible over Pogacar. About forty kilometers from the finish, the generous Baudin concluded his work, leaving the EF captain at the head with eleven others.
The leading group thinned out even further and in the final moments of the stage, only Healy, Yates, Arensman, O'Connor, and Storer remained, battling with attacks for the final victory. Just before the red triangle, Simon Yates made the decisive move that even broke Arensman, the last to surrender to the British rider's strength.
In the yellow jersey group, Visma Lease a Bike tried multiple times to isolate Pogacar and provoke him with actions by Kuss and Jorgenson, but the Slovenian always reacted with great authority and on the last climb even gave one of his accelerations that especially troubled Vauquelin, who lost three positions overall and is now sixth with a delay of 2'26".
Tomorrow the Grande Boucle will stop to give its protagonists a well-deserved rest, but on Wednesday it will restart from Toulouse with a 156-kilometer stage.
