Joao Almeida has won the 2025 Tour of Switzerland and has become the 70th rider to write his name in the race's record book. The Portuguese rider improved on his 2nd place from last year's edition and brought his nation its 4th overall victory, including the historic triple achieved by Rui Costa (winner in 2012, 2013, and 2014).
It was a week of great significance for Almeida, who, in addition to the overall classification victory, also celebrated 3 stage wins. The last cyclist before the Portuguese to win both the overall title and 3 stage victories in a single edition was Australian Phil Anderson in 1985.
Almeida has now reached 9 victories in the 2025 World Tour competitions and has thus moved to second place in the individual ranking, two points behind his team mate Pogacar. For Joao, these are 15 top placements in UCI's main circuit races this season and 5 stage races won in his career (3 of which in this calendar year, including the Tour of the Basque Country and Tour de Romandie).
Thanks to the first time in the top three for French rider Kévin Vauquelin and British rider Oscar Onley, 190 riders have now been on the podium at least once in the history of the Tour of Switzerland. Italy has been without a final victory since 1999 (thanks to Francesco Casagrande) and without a podium since 2017 (second place by Damiano Caruso), but scored a stage win in this edition thanks to Vincenzo Albanese in the Schwarzsee stage.
