Egan Bernal is sixth in the general classification and, on a day where problems were not lacking, the Colombian managed to save the situation and not give in to his rivals.
"I didn't give up for five years and I won't do it now" – said the Ineos rider after the finish line – "There are still mountains to climb and several days left".
Bernal had his difficult moments during the race: he crashed 90 km from the finish line, then he broke away from the leading group, but managed to come back after a tremendous effort. In the final part of the stage, he wavered again, but managed to finish eleventh and gain two positions in the new general classification of the Giro, where many things happened.
"The general classification has changed a lot in one day. There are many mountains left and days remaining. Today there will be the Mortirolo, then I will have two difficult days, but even if I'm exhausted and have nothing left in my legs, the idea will be to continue attacking, trying and never giving up".
After the 2022 accident, Bernal had many difficult months and his life completely changed after that event, and now his desire to win has returned. The Colombian is 43 seconds behind Damiano Caruso in fifth place and one minute and 52 seconds behind Derek Gee in fourth, and is 3 minutes and 23 seconds behind leader Isaac Del Toro. Certainly the gap is large, but in the Giro, as we have seen, anything can happen, and Bernal has said he will try to attack at every opportunity.
Today the Giro d'Italia will face an important stage, 155 kilometers long with three climbs and the Mortirolo that will make the selection. "These will be difficult days, but I will continue to attack always and try, this is the spirit with which we came".
