Isaac Del Toro has reached the end of the second week of the race with the pink jersey on his shoulders and now he can start dreaming of bringing the Giro d'Italia symbol home, even though the last week will be truly tough.
"Am I the team leader? I don't know, we need to discuss it with the team, we also need to talk with Ayuso. We are both racing to play our cards. The third week is long, I have shown that I'm doing well, but the road will decide who between me and Ayuso will be the leader. Certainly, we also need to take into account Yates, who is feeling very good and in form."
The twenty-one-year-old UAE Emirates rider could win the Giro d'Italia and realize one of his greatest dreams. A few years ago, he was watching Carapaz and Bernal's victories on television, and now he is amazed that he has the opportunity to race against them.
"Today was a very tough and nervous stage. It feels strange to be racing in a group with extraordinary riders. I was a fan of Bernal and Carapaz when I was younger, and now I have to chase them, be with them and fight against them. What they did in the race today was stressful for me, but even though they are two riders I greatly admired in the past, now I'm racing against them." The race from Fiume Veneto to Asiago was characterized by two important climbs, with the Monte Grappa GPM making the first major selection.
"It was an active race and I knew someone would try something on Monte Grappa. Ineos raced very aggressively, and it's a way of racing that I like. When I saw Arensman rejoining the group, I understood they would attack soon, and it happened right on Monte Grappa. I stuck to their wheels and managed to follow them, so I must say it was a very positive day, and now we wait for the rest day."
