Isaac Del Toro is the third youngest rider in the Giro d'Italia and, despite being 21 years old, he appeared calm in the press conference and answered all questions with extreme ease. The Mexican is the first rider from his country to wear the pink jersey, and for this reason his popularity has increased significantly, with Mexican media dedicating their front pages to him.
"I don't want to think that I've written a page in my country's history," Del Toro emphasized, "but it's a dream to be in this position. I'm happy because I've been given opportunities. I've worked so hard to obtain them and I know they're working now. I'm aware of how lucky I am, I know I've done some things well and managed to avoid mistakes. But I also know I've made some, and that's why I've become a better cyclist, but I never wanted to see this as a desire to make history or be the first".
Regarding a possible internal team competition, the young Mexican said he's not a rider who puts himself above others in the team. So wearing the pink jersey today doesn't mean he has earned the captain's status. "Now that I'm wearing this jersey, I don't feel like the team leader, but rather I can say I've competed internally with myself to improve. It has certainly been incredible and difficult to achieve, because it's something everyone wants, but I have no regrets about everything that has happened up to this point in terms of what I've been able to do".
Del Toro proved to be very strong on the Sienese gravel roads and probably his technique helped him break away with an experienced rider like Wout van Aert.
"To be honest, I'm not sure if technique was so important yesterday. I always feel comfortable on the bike, I always feel very confident and believe in myself. Sure, technique is important, but I don't know if it will be super important for the rest of the race. I'm sure we'll soon see who will be the best".
The young UAE Emirates rider is calm and is already thinking about the time trial in Pisa, where he will start for the first time with the pink jersey.
"It will definitely be exciting for me to start as a leader, but I think the most important thing is to do well until the end of the race, trying to keep the pink jersey in the team until the end".
For Isaac, family and friends are very important, and among the most present people are his brother Angel and his coach Freddy.
"There are so many important people around me like my brother and my coach and my family. I can't put one person above another, my family is always first for me because they are always present. All the people I know only want the best for me. I can only thank everyone: my teammates, the team, my family, my country. All the people I know only want me to be the best, and that's incredible".
