The Giro jerseys are pink, cyclamen, blue, and white: the latter was introduced to the Giro d'Italia in 1976, although at the time there was no jersey, just a white armband. Thus, the white color has identified the young riders' classification since 1976, and over the years it was not awarded from 1995 to 2006.
The first winner was Alfio Vandi, a Romagna climber who is now 69 years old. "My regret is that I never wore it, because in 1976 only a white armband was worn, the jersey was introduced the following year (won by Mario Beccia, ed.). But I'm still the first."
Vandi remains the youngest of the young: he won the classification at 20 years and 187 days. In the honor roll, four times the white jersey merged with the pink jersey of the Giro winner: Russian Eugenio Berzin (24 years) in 1994, Colombian Nairo Quintana (24 years) in 2014, Londoner Tao Geoghegan Hart (25 years) in 2020, and another Colombian, Egan Bernal (24 years), in 2021. But not always the older ones won it, indeed: sometimes they only wore it for a few days. This was the case for Francesco Moser and Vincenzo Nibali, while Marco Pantani wore it, but on loan in the 1994 Giro. The Pirate always remained second behind Berzin, same class of 1970, but five months younger. With Lazio rider Antonio Tiberi, 23 years old, fifth in the 2024 classification, Italy has returned to winning the white jersey 9 years after Fabio Aru.
All riders who are not yet 25 years old, born from January 1st, 2000, compete in this special classification. The first rider best classified in the individual general time classification is the daily young rider leader. This year there are many young riders, and some of them, in addition to aiming for the pink jersey, could also take home the best young rider recognition.
Among the best and youngest, the name of Juan Ayuso stands out, who at 22 years and 235 days will be the eleventh youngest rider in this Giro. Then there's Antonio Tiberi, who is 23 years and 319 days old and who last year wore white in the grand finale in Rome. 39 riders under 25 will participate in the pink race, and among these, 24 are making their debut in the Giro. Among the most famous names are Isaac Del Toro, Paul Magnier, and Joshua Tarling with Milan Fretin. The Italian young riders will be 14, and among these, the names of Filippo Baroncini, Giulio Pellizzari, Gianmarco Garofoli, Davide Piganzoli, and Lorenzo Milesi stand out.
