Another jersey that has always attracted many cycling enthusiasts is the one reserved for climbers, namely the Gran Premio della Montagna Classification. This special classification in the Giro d'Italia was established in 1933. The first winner, when there was not yet a distinctive jersey, was Alfredo Binda. Among the most important names who have conquered it are Gino Bartali, who won it 7 times between 1935 and 1947, Fausto Coppi 3 times, as well as Franco Bitossi and Claudio Chiappucci, while Eddy Merckx won it only once, just like Marco Pantani, to mention some of the most celebrated riders. In 1974, when the classification was won by the Spaniard Fuente, the green jersey was introduced which became blue in 2012. Since 2003, it has been sponsored by Banca Mediolanum, the longest-standing sponsor of the Giro d'Italia.
In the history of the Giro, the combination of general classification-climbers' classification was achieved by Alfredo Binda (1933), Gino Bartali (1936, 1937, 1946), Giovanni Valetti (1938), Fausto Coppi (1949), Hugo Koblet (1950), Charly Gaul (1956, 1959), Eddy Merckx (1968, also winner of the points classification), Andrew Hampsten (1988), Marco Pantani (1998), Chris Froome (2018) and Tadej Pogacar (2024).
The record for final green jerseys belongs to the Spaniard José Manuel Fuente, who won 4 consecutive ones from 1971 to 1974, although the record for victories before the jersey's introduction belongs to Gino Bartali with seven successes: 1935, 1936, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1946, 1947.
The last Italian to win the classification and wear the blue jersey was Giulio Ciccone in 2019, when he won the stage in Ponte di Legno with the Mortirolo.
In 2023, the king of the mountains jersey went to Thibaut Pinot, who finished fifth in the general classification, and this was also his last Giro d'Italia, as he retired at the end of the year.
Since the 1965 Giro d'Italia, the highest peak of the pink race has been called Cima Coppi, while in 2004 the Montagna Pantani was established, a title that designates the most representative mountain climbed by the race in various editions of the Giro.
Obviously, many riders who will fight for the general classification can also compete for the best climber classification, but their goal will remain the pink jersey. Therefore, it would not be surprising if the final winner of the pink race also takes home the blue jersey.
Among the favorites for the king of the mountains jersey are Ayuso, Bernal, Carapaz, Ciccone, Pidcock, Pellizzari, Dani Martinez, Landa, Bardet, Gaudu, Storer, Zana, Vine, Piganzoli, Fortunato, Quintana and Gee. But from this list, we cannot exclude Roglic, Tiberi, Adam Yates, Simon Yates, Hindley and Bilbao, who will primarily challenge for the general classification.
Regarding the mountain stages, the spectacle will begin with the seventh stage, from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo, with the climbs of Monte Urano, Vado della Forcella and the final ascent to Tagliacozzo. The other important stages will be stage 15, where riders will face the Monte Grappa and Dori, then after the second rest day it will be the turn of the three first-category GPM of Candriai, Santa Barbara and San Valentino. Climbing will resume in the last weekend with stage 19, which will have three first-category GPM, namely Col Tzecore, Col Saint-Pantaleon and Col de Joux. The Cima Coppi will be the Colle delle Finestre, in stage 20, which presents an almost constant gradient of 9.2% from start to finish (short steep section at Meana di Susa max 14%) and the first 9 km are paved, while the next 9 km are unpaved to the summit. During the first part of the climb, there are 29 hairpin turns in less than 4 km (up to the summit there are 45 hairpin turns).
The Montagna Pantani, which represents the most characteristic and representative climb of the race, will be the Mortirolo in stage 17. It will start with the Passo del Tonale and after descending towards Ponte di Legno, riders will tackle the Passo del Mortirolo from Monno with its last 3 km always over 10%. The descent will be very challenging until Grosio and then proceed with the long climb up to the gates of Bormio with the short climb of Motte.
