With a varied and challenging route, the Tour de Suisse consolidates its status as the most prestigious one-week stage race in the cycling calendar. The 88th edition of the national tour will also touch Italy, crossing the border once again.
Only 16 kilometers separate the starting location, Küssnacht, from the finish, Stockhütte, above Emmetten. Yet, over 1,300 kilometers and 20,000 meters of elevation await the competing champions between these two locations: truly a worthy framework for the 88th Men's Tour de Suisse.
"In June, Central Switzerland will be the epicenter of cycling. During the two weekends, we will witness high-level races and celebrate together with the cycling-passionate population of Central Switzerland," says Tour director Olivier Senn.
Unlike last year, a hilly circuit around Rigi will decide who will be the first rider to wear the yellow leader's jersey. "The opening stage on Sunday, June 15th promises great suspense. Both in the stage victory and the general classification, fans can expect an extraordinary start to the 2025 Tour de Suisse," declared circuit planning manager David Loosli.
With the double start on Monday and Tuesday in Aarau, the respective finish locations of Schwarzsee and Heiden will be reached. Two hilly stages that could be conquered by either sprinters or breakaway riders.
In 2025, the TdS goes beyond borders
On the fourth day of racing, the Tour will cross the first alpine pass. The Splügen Pass, at an altitude of 2,113 meters, represents both the day's challenge and the border crossing between Switzerland and Italy. "Like last year, we will again have a stage finish in a neighboring country, which this year will be in Piuro, in Valchiavenna. Cycling is very popular in Italy, and we expect many fans along the route," says Loosli, happy about the first Tour de Suisse stage in Valtellina.
The next day will be the queen stage, from La Punt in Engadin to Santa Maria in Calanca. Nearly 4,000 meters of elevation, two alpine passes (Julier and San Bernardino) and twice the steep and hard final climb to Santa Maria will determine the day's victories and defeats.
After a detour from Chur to Neuhausen am Rheinfall, and from there to Emmetten at the beginning of the second weekend, Sunday, June 22nd, a difficult mountain time trial from Beckenried to Stockhütte will crown the winner of the 88th Tour de Suisse Men. "On the last day, there's no room for tactics. Only the strongest can still aim for the final podium," says David Loosli with certainty.
By mid-April, the exact route and participating teams for the 2025 Tour de Suisse Women will be known. Additionally, with the Tour de Suisse Explorer this year, we will introduce a new side event to motivate the Swiss population to become interested in cycling and discover the Tour de Suisse stage locations in a new way.
