Last year we left her with a bitter taste, but this time Karlijn Swinkels arrived at the Trofeo Oro in Euro with the desire to improve her second place and did not miss her chance. The UAE Team Adq rider beat the strong cyclocross athlete Puck Pieterse (Fenix Deceuninck) in a two-rider sprint after a practically perfect work by her teammate Dominika Wlodarczyk.
Once again, the climb to the Fortress, ending about 12 km from the finish line, was decisive, where the great work of UAE Team Adq allowed the three athletes to gain an advantage over the group.
THE RACE Traditional route for the 13th edition of the Trofeo Oro in Euro, which offered a 106.8 km track open to every type of solution. In the first part of the race, the athletes covered a flat 13 km circuit repeated 5 times, but the real race began 41.8 km from the finish with the double lap of the Fortress circuit, a 3.5 km climb with an average of 6%.
Sandra Alonso (Ceratizit), Nela Slanikova (Team Dukla Praha) and Monica Castagna (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) animated the race from the initial stages without ever managing to truly break away due to the great work of Fenix Deceuninck and UAE Team Adq.
At the first passage on the Fortress climb, the race came to life and some athletes tried to make a difference, among the most active Margot Vanpachtenbeke (Volker Wesels Women's Pro Cycling Team), Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team Adq) and Puck Pieterse herself, who after her good performance yesterday at Strade Bianche showed she had excellent legs. In the final ascent, however, the work of the Emirates team was relentless, with Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini and Silvia Persico preparing the attack for their teammates.
It was on the climb that the trio formed, composed of Polish champion Dominika Wlodarczyk, Karlijn Swinkels, and Puck Pieterse. UAE Team Adq relied on their numerical superiority, with Wlodarczyk putting herself at the service of her teammate who then finalized the work with a beautiful victory.
"I'm extremely happy, I believe the team was truly perfect today, each of my teammates was incredible," said Karlijn Swinkels after the finish. "On the climb, we tried to make a difference by increasing speed and creating some selection. At one point, Puck Pieterse responded to the attack of my teammate Dominika Wlodarczyk, and at that point, I followed them. I admit it was the perfect solution for me, I was on their wheel, recovered my energy to play everything in the finale."
