TOUR DOWN UNDER. WILLUNGA HILL QUEEN IS NOEMI RÜEGG: STAGE AND JERSEY. CIABOCCO BEST YOUNG RIDER

Swiss champion Noemi Rüegg conquers the top of Willunga Hill, the second stage of the Tour Down Under 2025, and the leader's jersey of the Australian race. The 23-year-old from EF Education-Oatly won by distancing the Dutch rider from Liv AlUla Jayco Silke Smulders by 10" and the Norwegian Mie Bjørnsdal Ottestad from Uno-X Mobility by 26". The stage, starting from Unley and contested over a distance of 115 kilometers, was decided 800 meters from the finish line when Silke Smulders broke away from the leading group trying to surprise her rivals, but was caught by Noemi Rüegg who then powerfully dropped the Australian, crossing the finish line alone. Best among the Italians, and also leader of the young riders classification, Eleonora Ciabocco (Team Picnic PostNL), who finished fifteenth today, ahead of Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ).

THE RACE REPORT - The first thirty kilometers were animated by attacks from the Polish UAE Team ADQ rider Dominika Włodarczyk - who won the first mountain prize of the day at Windy Point - and the Australian National Team athletes Alyssa Polites, Maeve Plouffe, and Alli Anderson. The latter, always very active, tried to escape multiple times and around the fiftieth kilometer of the race managed to gain the necessary advantage to start the first real breakaway of the day, also conquering the first Intermediate Sprint at McLaren Flat. Anderson, who will turn 22 in July, rode solo until she was caught by New Zealander Ally Wollaston (FDJ - SUEZ) who joined her wheel after a determined chase. The day's breakaway ended at the foot of the first climb to Willunga Hill when the group led by Lidl Trek caught the escapees. The pace set by Amanda Spratt and Niamh Fisher-Black selected the peloton, and about thirty riders remained at the front, including Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance - Soudal Team), Julie Van de Velde (AG Insurance - Soudal Team), Neve Bradbury (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto), Chloé Dygert (CANYON//SRAM) zondacrypto Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ), Greta Marturano (UAE Team ADQ), Barbara Malcotti (Human Powered), Eleonora Ciabocco (Picnic) Health Amber Kraak (FDJ - SUEZ) and Elise Chabbey (FDJ - SUEZ). In the subsequent descent, the group of attackers broke into several sections, and in the last ten kilometers of the race, chaos erupted with a unleashed Chloé Dygert attacking multiple times. The 28-year-old American two-time world time trial champion at 4 kilometers broke the deadlock and powerfully escaped from the small group but was then caught and overtaken by Neve Bradbury (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto), Noemi Rüegg (EF Education-Oatly), Silke Smulders (Liv AlUla) Jayco Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl - Trek), Elise Chabbey (FDJ - SUEZ) and Dominika Włodarczyk (UAE Team ADQ). The slopes of Willunga Hill further selected the riders, and before the red triangle of the last kilometer, Fisher-Black, Bradbury, and Chabbey tried to attack, but as written at the beginning, the decisive progression was that of Rüegg, who will start tomorrow from Stirling wearing the leader's jersey.
