A grand-style ceremony for the traditional Honor Tour that this year animated the Giovanni Testori auditorium in the Lombardy region. The traditional event organized by the Italian Cycling Federation celebrated the Italian athletes who distinguished themselves with the blue jersey in all disciplines, from road to track and off-road. 120 medals including one gold, two silver and one bronze Olympic, international continental titles, super numbers that testify to the strength of the Italian movement.
"I am proud of the achievements, it was a special four-year period in which I had the opportunity to experience two editions of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The number of races and affiliates has increased, cycling once again confirms itself as one of the driving sports of the Italian movement" which kicked off the event. The CONI president Giovanni Malagò also emphasized the strength of the Italian cycling movement "the cycling medals represented 10% of the Italian medals in Paris 2024, it is an important figure that makes you reflect. I believe that the concept of cycling has changed over the years, now even the general public knows that beyond the road there is the track, Mountain Bike and other disciplines, but above all they are passionate about watching them. There is always the will to improve and I believe that for Los Angeles 2028 we will be super ready."
Claudia Colla, regional representative of the European Union Commission, and Federica Picchi, undersecretary of sport in the Lombardy region, completed the institutional framework. A somewhat unusual presence at the Honor Tour among the guests was also the president of the Italian Weightlifting Federation, Roberto Miglietta, to seal the close collaboration with cycling. From the agreement between the two federations, a real project is born in which weightlifting technicians will support those of the two wheels for a more complete preparation that includes strength work and therefore greater explosiveness.
Representing weightlifting were Genna Toko Kegne, current European champion, and Donato Telesca, Paralympic bronze medalist in Paris 2024. In an afternoon of champions, an absolute representative of cycling like Giuseppe Saronni, now vice president of the Cycling League, who received the career award, could not be missing. "In my time, wearing the blue jersey was an honor, but it was even more difficult to agree during the race. Perhaps we didn't win everything we could have, but we had a lot of fun. Cycling has changed, once only the first was rewarded, now credit is also given to others. In football, the entire team is world champion, and I believe that something similar should be done in cycling, perhaps rewarding the entire world champion's team."
Many athletes were awarded in both the Olympic and Paralympic sectors, led by Luca Mazzone, flag bearer of Paris 2024. Champions of MTB, cyclocross, gravel, track and off-road followed one another on stage. The large audience was able to applaud Mirko Maestri and Elena Cecchini, European champions in the mixed relay, Elisa Balsamo, Martina Alzini, Martina Fidanza and Filippo Ganna.
"This year the gold medal was missing, but I cannot complain, I believe I have done my best, I have given my soul and heart together with my guys on the track. Thanks to the technicians who believe in us and to the staff." Special emotions for those who won a medal in Paris, such as the aforementioned Filippo Ganna, Elia Viviani, Simone Consonni, Francesco Lamon, Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini.
"It was beautiful, even though we have had several award ceremonies, we still haven't fully realized what happened. It's a unique emotion, every time we remember what happened in Paris, we get goosebumps, now we can only work harder and commit ourselves to the maximum." Here are the words of Elia Viviani: "It was an Olympics with very high expectations, then things went differently. With Simone Consonni, we were a whisker away from victory, we won a silver medal in the Madison that was truly special. It was a nice way to close my Olympic story. Cycling, like all sports, is moving in a direction where young people are extremely important and take example from us older ones. I believe that the concept of multidisciplinarity should continue among all young people who want to do and challenge themselves, and I'm happy that the Federation supports all this."
During the Honor Tour, there was space for a very special delivery: the gold collar of sporting merit to Vittoria Guazzini, who this year, paired with Chiara Consonni, gave the Italian expedition a beautiful Olympic title.
