In the last kilometer of the stage concluding at 2,253 meters above sea level at Bola del Mundo, no spectators will be allowed. This is the decision made by the organizers of the Vuelta Espana following protests from an environmental group.
Initially, the protesters had requested the cancellation of the final climb but, after some evaluations, the Spanish race officials decided to apply controls and restrictions along the final climb to preserve the natural environment hosting the concluding part of the twentieth stage.
Fans will be asked to position themselves preferably in the initial and central parts of the Puerto de Navacerrada climb and thus avoiding as much as possible accessing the last 3 kilometers of the climb. For those who want to position themselves in the cemented climb zone, the organizers ask to occupy both sides alongside the roadway without moving away from the margins. The event managers also emphasize the importance of respecting the flora and fauna of the Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama, reminding people not to litter in the environment.
The twentieth and penultimate stage of the Vuelta Espana, we recall, will start from Robledo de Chavela and conclude at Bola del Mundo after 164 kilometers of racing and 5 mountain passes.
