TIRRENO. Freire: soddisfatto della mia prestazione
| 08/03/2012 | 18:43 Oscar Freire è salito sul podio della "Tirreno - Adriatico" nella seconda tappa, da San Vincenzo a Indicatore: il corridore spagnolo ha chiuso al secondo posto alle spalle di Mark Cavendish (Sky). "Sono abbastanza soddisfatto della tappa di oggi - ha detto il corridore di Torrelavega - anche durante le salite le mie gambe erano a posto, e questo significa che la mia forma sta migliorando giorno dopo giorno. Nella volata finale ho cercato di fare del mio meglio, ma Farrar ha lanciato letteralmente Cavendish e non sono stato in grado di colmare il divario. In ogni modo, è un altro buon risultato che mi dà forti motivazioni a lottare per la vittoria nei prossimi giorni ".
Alla Parigi-Nizza, Simon Spilak ha ottenuto un ottimo quinto posto ed è risalito al quinto posto della classifica generale. "Sono davvero contento del risultato di oggi - ha detto il corridore sloveno - Ho finito con tutti quei corridori che lottano per la generale, sono felice di essere stato in grado di raggiungere il traguardo con questo gruppo».
Oscar Freire got on the podium today in "Tirreno - Adriatico" second stage, from San Vincenzo to Indicatore, 230-km long: Katusha Team's Spanish rider again proved to be in a good shape, and he was second at the final sprint right behind the World Champion Mark Cavendish (Sky). The race was characterized by an early breakaway by two Italian riders: Pirazzi (Colnago) and Caccia (Farnese Vini). The two-man escape reached a 7'30'' highest gap over the main group, before being neutralized with 29 kilometres to go. The group stayed in lock step until the last sprint, characterized by a huge crash which broke the bunch in two parts with 2 kilometres to go. The rush was won by Cavendish: the oncoming Freire tried to close the gap but he could not reach the British rider. Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Barracuda) was third. "I'm quite satisfied with today's stage - said the rider from Torrelavega - also during the climbings my legs were alright, and this means my shape is improving day after day. In the final sprint I tried to do my best, but Cavendish slipstreamed Farrar, the man who opened the rush: that gave him a great speed, and I wasn't able to close the gap. Anyways, it's another good result which gives me strong motivations to fight for win during next days".
"Paris - Nice": Spilak, 5th in Mende mountain finish, moves to 5th place in general classification Today it took place the 5th stage of "Paris - Nice", from Onet-le-Chateau to Mende. A very hard course: in 178 kilometres there were 6 climbings, three in the last 40 kilometres, and 1st category uphill finish in the last 3 kilometres (10% average pendence). Simon Spilak, the leader of Katusha Team in general classification, was able to reach the 5th position today: thanks to this result, the Slovenian rider moves from 9th to 5th place in general classification too, 37'' far from the leader Bradley Wiggins (Sky). The race was characterized by an early 4-man breakaway: Clarke (GreenEdge), Veuchelen (Vacansoleil), Arashiro (Europcar) and Le Lay (Saur Sojasun). The escape reached a highest gap of 7' over the main group. When the breakaway seemed over, with 8 kilometres to go, thanks also to the huge work of Katusha Team which imposed its pace, Veuchelen tried a solo-action: but his blitz is neutralized with 3 kilometres to go, right before the last climbing. The uphill finish made a good selection: the main group was reduced first to 25 elements, then to just 15 riders. With 500 metres to go, Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil) anticipated his rush, surprised his rivals and won the stage. A group of four riders reached the finishing line 6'' far from today's winner: Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won the mini-sprint and placed second; the leader Wiggins finished third; Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) closed fourth; and Simon Spilak was 5th. "I'm really happy with today's result - said the Slovenian rider - I finished with all those riders which are fighting for general classification: moreover they're real champions, so I'm glad I was able to reach the finishing line with this group. The stage was very hard: besides the 6 climbings, today it was really cold. My strategy during the last climbing in Mende was to stay with Valverde and keep his pace: I managed to, but in the last sprint I didn't have enough energies for trying to enter the podium. Anyways, now I'm 5th in general classification: a good position, which can even improve".
