Among the compliments to Lorenzo Finn winner in Romania at the Sibiu Tour, following his success at the Giro Next Gen, and Italian planning ahead of the Tour de l'Avenir and the Canadian World Championships, Marino Amadori also looks at the horizon of the "beautiful youth" on bikes while witnessing the excellent performances of one of his protégés at the Grande Boucle.
As a former technical commissioner of Davide Piganzoli among the under 23s, he can only be satisfied: "at his first Tour I see him increasingly mature, tasked with piloting Jonas Vingegaard: a task he performs with ever greater confidence, I would say clarity and promptness, also a key factor like serenity. Not only that. Piganzoli, while having to respect the superior team logic, boasts a far from negligible placement in the general classification. After all, I recall, he was able in the past to stand on his own by finishing on the podium at the Avenir won by Del Toro".
Behind Pellizzari, another homo novus of Italian cycling: "Giulio has already shown a lot, I wouldn't overemphasize the disappointments we're experiencing, Davide had a different path of integration into professionalism. Now he will experience the structural benefits of having raced, in this way, two grand tours in very close succession: as they say, 'That's big stuff!'".
Speaking of debutants on the roads of France, there are three other Italians, two of whom (the third is Tiberi), Marco Frigo and Lorenzo Germani with national team experience under you: how do you see them compared to how you knew them?
"Both very dedicated and with maximum benefit to the precious task assigned to them by Nsn and Groupama Fdj-United. Increasingly, these riders are able to refine their dimension as professionals who at their age are facing the phase of defining their own characteristics, typical of 25-year-olds. Frigo, who does specialized and precious work for Girmay, also achieved a fourth place after a long breakaway at Foix. Yes, Marco and Lorenzo are riders of substance".
Amadori, what do you think of 19-year-old Paul Seixas at the Tour?
"That his team decided so and that his participation happened truly by popular demand. That said, personally I'm not one to rush things like this, just think that Tadej Pogacar spent two years in the category, taking flight with his victory at the 2018 Avenir. Well, on Seixas, who is undoubtedly doing great things, as a champion, in the medium term we will evaluate whether fielding him at the Grande Boucle was positive or not".
Lorenzo Finn opted for (relative) gradualism...
"By stepping up this year, winning Next Gen and doing very well on other occasions, despite the bad luck he had at the Tour of the Alps. In August, with participation in the trans-Alpine stage race, still among the under 23s, he will race for a Giro-Avenir pairing that I think can project him best towards the World Championships, we'll see how".
The national team, after the demise of the Nations Cup, how has it changed?
"I must thank the Federation for giving me the opportunity to race with Continental team riders who otherwise wouldn't be able to have these international experiences. In coordination with the riders in the World Tour development squads, my monitoring is continuous, knowing well that for the World and European Championships I fortunately don't lack prospects to observe. And select".
