Today's route goes from Pau to Gavarnie-Gèdre, covering 186.2 kilometers with 4,100 meters of elevation gain. The day's program includes a couple of climbs just to warm up: the first is the Côte de Loucrup, a category 4 climb at km 51, 2 km at 7.1%; followed by the Côte de Mauzevin, a category 3 with the summit at km 77.3, a 3 km climb at 3.8%.
After that, things get serious with the Col d'Aspin, a category 1 climb, summit at km 118 after tackling 12 km of climbing at 6.5%. Descent and then comes the Col du Tourmalet Souvenir Jacques Goddet, the first Hors Catégorie of this edition, categorized climb at km 147.8: the ascent is 17.1 km with an average gradient of 7.3%.
It's difficult to predict what might happen, whether the big names will attack or if the distance of the last categorized climb from the finish will push them to conserve energy: the finale, in any case, is a very long climb - 18.7 km at 3.7% - grueling and unpredictable.
