ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN 10 OUT OF 10. She has never hidden it, the Giro is her favorite race and today she gave everyone watching on the course and in front of the television a true spectacle. She herself defined herself as an outsider to the group of favorites, yet today she beat those who according to the bookmakers should really be the ones to beat by over 1 minute. Anna didn't have the chance to practice the time trial like all her rivals did, so this morning she doesn't waste time, climbs to the top and studies the almost 13 km of racing. At the first intermediate point she's already in the lead, then she increases her advantage securing a clear victory. In the interviews after the finish she speaks of an important success for the whole team, a clear signal after Wiebes' disqualification and after Harvey's withdrawal, today she also raced for them. Almost 5 years have passed since her last success at the Giro yet here she is winning again with a brilliant pink jersey.
MARLEN REUSSER 8. For most bookmakers she was the undisputed favorite and indeed she puts in an incredible climbing time, but then Van der Breggen arrives and completely turns the situation around. Reusser loses over 1 minute compared to the new pink jersey wearer, but what strikes most is her lucidity at the finish where without much ado she admits her verdict: the Dutch rider was the strongest. For some it may seem like she came out defeated, but faced with such a performance by Van Der Breggen, the Swiss rider's second place can be read as the best among human beings. By her own admission something wasn't right, she will surely have time to make up for it.
DEMI VOLLERING 7. Everyone expected her to win at the top of Nevegal, but Demi immediately paid the price from her mentor Van der Breggen and indeed never shone as she has accustomed us to. From certain points of view it's a defeat, but it's still a third place on an extremely tough stage. It's pointless to deny that from a champion like her we expected much more.
MONICA TRINCA COLONEL 9. Until three years ago thinking of seeing her at the Giro was just an impossible fantasy, doing a time trial of this level wasn't even in her head. Today Monica put in an incredible performance starting from the intermediate point where she did worse only than Van der Breggen, then the Valtellina native climbed with consistency. Trinca Colonel gave everything, best of the Italians, a fifth place just 27" behind Reusser and worth its weight in gold. From this moment the real Giro has begun and it seems Monica is definitely in the mix.
VALENTINA VENERUCCI 7. Last year she wrote a small page of history becoming the second San Marino athlete to compete in the Giro d'Italia (the first was Daniela Veronesi, class of 1972, seven Giros d'Italia with 2 stage wins, four Tour de France with one stage victory, four times at the World Championships), today Valentina carves out a leading role in the first stage of the time trial. For a long time her finish time is the best at the line and for many it's already a surprise. At the end of the day she will come close to the top 20, but for her who races in a Continental team a result like this on such a tough stage is more than special.
ISABELLA HOLMGREN 7. She just turned 21 yet when the going gets tough she makes her presence known. The Canadian is a true talent that the Lidl Trek team is carefully nurturing, meanwhile tomorrow she will start with the white jersey of best young rider.
ELISA LONGO BORGHINI 6.5. Elisa tried and retried this climb to be ready knowing she would have to defend herself from the attacks of her rivals. The Italian road race champion arrived at the Giro after a turbulent spring, aware of her difficulties but with the desire to put herself to the test, pedaling with both heart and head. At the finish she's eighth, a result that for some falls short of expectations, but we're sure that for Longo it's already a point to build on. Without counting Van der Breggen, she will need to make up 47" against Reusser and 40" against Vollering, it's difficult but not impossible.
MARION BUNEL 5. She's the real big disappointment of this time trial climb. The very strong French climber finished third at the Vuelta and is at the Giro to fight for the overall classification, but just when the road starts to climb she pays the price.
LAURA TOMASI FAN CLUB 10. Laura isn't at the Giro, but her fans are. Positioned on the final stretch of the climb with t-shirts and enthusiasm they cheer for everyone, no one excluded. They accompany every athlete during the climb encouraging her to face the last two kilometers, pushing her not with their hands but with their voices.
