Jonas Vingegaard has written an indelible page in the history of cycling. With his victory at the 2026 Giro d'Italia, the Danish superstar from Visma-Lease a Bike has completed the Triple Crown, conquering all three Grand Tours in less than four years: the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 and the Vuelta in 2025. An achievement accomplished by only seven other champions in the history of this sport: Anquetil, Gimondi, Merckx, Hinault, Contador, Nibali and Froome. The 29-year-old from Hillerslev controlled the race with the confidence of the greatest champions, building his advantage in the mountain stages (five victories in as many summit finishes) and defending it with clarity in the most treacherous sections. After three weeks, Vingegaard crossed the finish line in Rome with a clear margin over his rivals, sealing a Giro conducted throughout with authority: Austrian Gall second at 5'22", Australian Hindley third at 6'25".
The most emotional moment came on the final podium, when Vingegaard wanted his wife Trine and their two children Frida and Hugo by his side. An image that tells the story of the man beyond the champion: the kiss to his family, tears barely held back, joy shared with those who supported him every step of the way. Visibly moved, the Danish rider struggled to find the right words: "Winning all three Grand Tours is truly special for me. It's difficult to find words to describe my emotion. And it's truly special to have my family here at the finish line, to have them with me, to kiss them. They have always supported me, and of course these are important emotions. I've won many races, but I've never felt anything like this, having them here beside me is truly so special. They've put up with so much, in everything, and I couldn't have done it without them."
What will he do in the coming days?
"I'll stay in Rome for a few days with my family. We'll enjoy some time together, really. Then I'll head back to Denmark and start preparing for the Tour."
Barely time to celebrate, and Vingegaard is already looking ahead. The Tour de France, the race that consecrated him with two consecutive victories in 2022 and 2023, is his next objective. Should he triumph again in July, the Danish rider would add another extraordinary chapter to an already legendary career: after Pantani 1998, the feat has been accomplished only by Pogacar 2024. For now, though, Rome is his. And with it, a place in history.
