Jonas VINGEGAARD. 10 and honors. He left his mark, his face, his heart on this Giro dominated, even if he never wanted to kill it, just stun it a little. He did what he wanted, today as well. He attacks eleven kilometers from the finish line and enjoys the final parade at Piancavallo that precedes the final one in Rome. He gives himself to the passion of Friuli, which responds like never before in this Giro, invading the roads with the passion of always, which makes this Region a symbol of unique and authentic cycling passion. He breathes it, he has written it on the pink jersey that Friuli is something special, that these are special people, that this is a hard and severe land, but it also knows how to be hospitable, generous and fertile like few others. He perceives it all perfectly, because Jonas is a rider of sentiment, who will also kiss the handlebars with the image of his loves and the ring that certifies their love, but he puts his heart into it, for all that immense love.
Felix GALL. 7. He never manages to keep pace with Vingegaard, but in this final stretch of the Giro he struggles to keep his own pace, so much so that he breaks away with the Dane, gains on his direct rivals but then is regularly caught, because "that's how it goes". He sweats blood, but conquers with full merit the place of honor: with honor.
Jay HINDLEY. 7. He keeps high the name of a great team, Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe, which loses our Giulio Pellizzari to a virus, and risks losing the Australian for the same reason, but he switches to hard fighting mode without fear and with stubborn determination reaches the podium. Today's finish, tomorrow's podium. Piancavallo weighs the value: which is the absolute one.
Thymen ARENSMAN. 6. Today he lives a day of exhaustion, he gives the idea and impression of being truly in reserve, but on his way he finds an immense Egan Bernal (rating 8), who escorts him, saves him, elevates him. He keeps him up there in front. That's fine.
Derek GEE. 6.5. What a struggle, today as well. He is the man designated to make the classification and in the end, the Canadian makes the classification for Lidl-Trek. He finishes in the top ten, but he finishes fifth. A couple of steps from the podium, which is a mountain: insurmountable.
Afonso EULALIO. 8. The man who smiles at the world laughs at himself even after the finish line. After nine days in pink, he brings home the white jersey of best young rider to Rome and then home. He engages in a beautiful and intense arm-wrestling match with our Davide Piganzoli: tough. He seems to give in, then resists, holds on, relaunches and leaves him there. The jersey is his. He smiles: it couldn't be otherwise.
Damiano CARUSO. 8. Eight for everything: for what he has done in his career, for what he has done in this Giro and for what he will do because, I am certain, he will do well: he is too diligent and intelligent a person not to. He decides that this is his last Giro. He certainly decides well, but there is no reason to be happy. I simply thank him: happy to have found him on my path.
Michael STORER. 6.5. What tenacity: if I were the marketing manager of Duracell batteries I would hire him as a testimonial: it lasts a long time, much longer. It never runs out.
Davide PIGANZOLI. 6.5. Tenth of the stage, 8th in the general classification: overall his Giro deserves applause. But easy on the easy enthusiasm. Let him grow in tranquility. Don't ask him for the moon, going into the shadows is just a moment away.
Ludovico CRESCIOLI. 7. Another cyclist's mind, who won't hear of giving up, who doesn't know what it means to slow down. He finishes 12th of the stage, in the third week: that means something.
Mathys RONDEL, 6.5. He closes the third week in decline, but it's not a collapse, it's a slow glide without ever really losing altitude.
Giulio CICCONE. 7. He does what was left for him to do: win the Mediolanum blue jersey of the climbers. It's clear that the jersey of the best grimpeur doesn't go to the best climber of the Giro, because that one, today, preferred the stage. The Abruzzese would have also preferred the stage, but had to make do with what the convent offers.
Manuele TAROZZI. 6. The man from Faenza of Bardiani CSF 7 Saber is one born to escape: not from his own responsibilities.
Mattia BAIS. 6. The boy from Polti VisitMalta is the first to unleash hell in the last mountain stage of this Giro. He's in a hurry to get away, just like Andreas Leknessund (Uno X) who is the quickest to grab his wheel.
PIANCAVALLO. 10 and honors. Finally a mountain of passion, crowds and participation. A sea of humanity, strictly on bicycles. Strictly in cyclist attire. Strictly festive. Grilled meat and pints of beer, sausages and Cabernet as if it were raining, music at full blast and "craziness" in power: a full-fledged rave, which by a hair's breadth pays homage to the 109th Giro that goes into the archives. "I am Friuli" is the claim of the pink jersey; they are much more, because Friuli thanks and does not forget: and they are passion. What a great finale! Too bad for the general narrative of this entire Giro, very subdued and much less participated. The numbers are down, but in the future it will be better: the 110th Giro will start from Friuli (Trieste?): and already this is good news. We are for Friuli.
