Fifth pink jersey for Jonas Vingegaard in the spectacular landscape of the Treviso hills covered by Prosecco vineyards. And then the Muro di Ca' del Poggio, with 25,000 people who transformed it into an almost Flemish atmosphere. The Danish rider from Visma-Lease a Bike, 29 years old and four stage wins on as many mountain finishes, is enthusiastic: "Of course, there was a fantastic atmosphere, there were many people and you could really feel that they were doing something special. So yes, it was really beautiful".
Now the two toughest stages: the Dolomites with the Giau and Piancavallo.
"Well, to be honest, first of all we consider the Alleghe stage, I go forward day by day, and at the moment I haven't yet spoken with the sporting directors. However, there's Piganzoli who is 2'17" behind the white jersey for young riders (Eulalio wears it, ed.), and I think it would be a great result for him to win it. I would very much like to see him in that jersey".
In Italy they call him "the Fisherman King". Do you like this nickname?
"Actually, I don't have a nickname. I mean, I've heard several times things like "the fisherman" or something like that, which is obvious given what I did before. Yes, for me it's a good nickname, it's fantastic. Of course, I wasn't a fisherman but I worked in the fish trade".
Your team, which is now called Visma, has won nine Grand Tours from 2019 to today, between the Giro, Tour and Vuelta, with four different riders: you (3), Kuss (1), Roglic (4) and Simon Yates (1). Are you made for this type of racing?
"Yes, I think it's in the team's DNA. Many years ago what they wanted was to build a team to win the Grand Tours, and it happened".
Why do you love cycling? What do you like about cycling?
"I like to win, and then the adrenaline, obviously. Yes, I like to race against other people. I've always been someone who likes to compete, and then when you start cycling, you want to win and it's fantastic".
How important is it to have data on your bike computer: I mean power, speed, etc?
"Well, during the race I don't look at them because often it doesn't matter. But if you have to push 400 watts, you have to push 400 watts and yes, then that's what you do. Usually I only look at the data for half the stage".
