It's called "Scarpa's Tour" and it's a game just like the ones Michele constantly played, a challenge of the kind he would launch every day to the "cyclosonates" - that's what he called amateur cyclists - whom he would meet during his training rides, on his climbs. And his climbs are precisely the key to the game, conceived by his brother Marco and by the women and men of the Michele Scarponi Foundation: 21 climbs across 9 different regions and 15 Italian provinces to pedal once more with Scarpa.
A game that will be launched tomorrow, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of one of the most beautiful days of Michele's career: it was the third-to-last stage of the 2016 Giro d'Italia, starting from Pinerolo where Vincenzo Nibali was fourth in the standings, almost 5 minutes behind the pink jersey Steven Kruijswijk; second was Esteban Chaves, third Alejandro Valverde. That day Scarpa entered the breakaway, and during the long climb towards the Colle dell'Agnello, the Cima Coppi of that Giro, he remained alone. But then, while he was flying towards victory in Risoul, his team manager Paolo Slongo told him what had happened: in an attempt to keep up with a rampaging Nibali, Kruijswijk had crashed into a wall of snow and damaged his back and his bike. Michele chose to stop and wait for his captain: he left behind a certain victory in the Giro's mountain stage to pursue Vincenzo's dream of overturning the standings. And that's how it went. And that gesture by Michele, which exalts team victory and the profound meaning of cycling, became the logo of the Foundation, the Foot on the Ground. A gesture that Marco and the Foundation's educators tell thousands of students from Italian schools every year. Students who have learned to keep Michele in their hearts.
But let's get back to Scarpa's Tour. To find Michele again we must climb the mountains, and the Foundation has chosen 21 of them for this contest that held particular significance in Michele's heart and in the history of champion Scarponi. There's no rush, the spirit is to pedal, to savor the effort of the climb, the joy of the descent and to put your foot on the ground for road safety. The goal is to live the journey together, stopping, breathing and putting your foot on the ground.
Discover the 21 climbs here: there's obviously the Colle dell'Agnello, there's the Castelletta, but also the Giara di Gesturi, Monte Petrano, the Aprica, the Gardeccia. Obviously Mount Etna.
