"Too much interference from the Cycling League, it should collaborate more with the Federation". Repubblica headlines a lengthy interview released by FCI President Dagnoni, focused on the difficult relations between the two institutions that oversee the world of cycling. Reporter Cosimo Cito writes in the introductory section, citing the role of Honorable Pella at the head of the League, "which has become a sort of shadow Federation. CONI has taken action to try to learn more about the management of funds from Sport and Health. And the Federation has raised its level of oversight".
Then Dagnoni speaks: "The League is an emanation of the Federation, it works under delegation from the Federation, not in its place. I, even against some elements of my federal council, insisted that we keep the League alive, a historic body of our cycling, giving it an operational scope well-defined, that of professionalism. This League, however, has greatly expanded: it has involved women's cycling, which is not professional, it has involved Continental teams that are effectively amateur societies" responds the FCI president, who adds: "Pella doesn't know the rules of the environment at all. In his role as a deputy he is very good, I must be honest, at finding funds, including public funds. Those he is good at finding, however, only tangentially benefit cycling. For races, the organizers truly get the crumbs".
Dagnoni adds: "Last year we, as a Federation, with our 100,000 members and Olympic preparation activities to keep alive, received 9 million in public contributions through Sport and Health. The League, which represents 18-19 teams, received about 3.5 million".
The federation chief explains CONI's involvement, which "requested a meeting with Minister Abodi and Sport and Health as well. In the last federal council, the entire council voted in favor of our auditors' intervention to try to understand the situation. Pella also tried to intimidate me by saying 'be careful because now I'm sending the Court of Auditors after you'. I replied that he can do whatever he wants, we are completely at ease".
