Filippo GANNA. 10 with honors. Arrow, lightning and tornado, Filippo is all of that and more. He switches into rocket mode and flies away, skimming the ground with his 64-tooth chainring. Pippo is in a hurry, eager to arrive and secure his 8th Giro victory. Fourth seasonal success, three time trials. The first at the Volta ao Algarve, the second in these parts, not far from here, at Lido di Camaiore, at Tirreno Adriatico. Plus the one in Belgium at the Doors Van Vlaanderen. Filippo wins with a masterful performance, averaging 55 km/h. Along his route, across the 42 kilometers connecting Viareggio to Massa, the Netcompany Ineos grenadier catches and passes seven riders. Seven riders who started before him, caught and overtaken with momentum. A clear and evident superiority. A complete and total victory, which rewards him for all the work done to reach these milestones and to help his teammates. Career victory number 40, a round figure, an important number, which could be updated very soon, especially since Pippo has never been slow.
Thymen ARENSMAN. 9. If Ganna is lightning, Thymen is thunder. He makes himself heard, but also seen. Behind the immensity of the Verbano native there is the Dutch gentleman, who pedals very hard, who among the general classification contenders with pink jersey ambitions is the one who comes closest, who virtually climbs onto the podium.
Remi CAVAGNA. 8.5. For the 30-year-old Groupama rider, going fast in a time trial is absolutely nothing new. He has the exercise in his mind and brings home a placement that boosts morale, for a team that until today had not yet achieved any top-ten finishes.
Sjoerd BAX. 8. Another flying Dutchman, who does great things for Pinarello Q36.5. For the 30-year-old tulip grower, a prestigious placement. For the team directed by Gabriele Missaglia, an injection of confidence after so much bad luck. For Fausto Pinarello a total and global triumph: three of his bicycles in the top four positions. Sleek bicycles.
Derek GEE. 8. The Lidl-Trek Canadian brings his time trial aptitude to the road. He is the designated captain for the German team of Luca Guercilena, and today he says the condition is there. He makes a jump in the standings of six positions: kangaroo of the day.
Max WALSCHEID. 8. Parallel race for the other Lidl-Trek man who finishes 1" behind Gee. An absolutely high-level time trial, for a Giro that is ready to take off.
Johan PRICE-PEJTERSEN. 7. The 26-year-old Danish Alpecin rider makes this time trial his showcase: and he shows himself very well.
Mikkel BJERG. 6.5. If he wants to, he can do time trials even better. But for him, from tomorrow onwards, there is a Giro to tackle head-on and today he needed to use his head a bit.
Lorenzo MILESI. 8. He is one of the most beautiful realities of our cycling. So far he has ridden a Giro of absolute level and his time trial goes in this direction too. A top-ten placement that tells us this guy has talent to spare and we haven't yet seen the best of him.
Ben O'CONNOR. 6.5. Good but not very good. Starts very strong, finishes strong.
Jonas VINGEGAARD. 6. The impression is that he pedaled steadily, with a cadence stabilized at 90-95 pedal strokes per minute and constant wattage at 350-380. In truth he arrives with signs of fatigue on his face: in short, he didn't take a stroll, but already on the eve I was convinced he would leave the jersey for just a few seconds and that's exactly what happened. The Pila is still far away.
Michael STORER. 6.5. He doesn't do a monstrous time trial, but loses only 5" from the Dane.
Giulio PELLIZZARI. 7. Three not-so-easy days, today he was also in doubt. Instead, he puts on display a time trial that allows him to lose only 18" from Vingegaard: who would have predicted that?
Jai HINDLEY. 6. He's not doing well either, like Giulio he's dealing with a nasty virus, but in any case he concedes 13" to Pellizzari.
Felix GALL. 4. He arrives devastated, as if he had ridden two time trials in the same session. He leaves Vingegaard a full 1'22".
Mathys RONDEL. 5. He is one of the big surprises of this Giro, but you can't improvise in time trials. Needs to be reassessed.
Afonso EULALIO. 10. 16" slower than Rondel, but the Portuguese rider in pink defends himself magnificently, maintaining the symbol of the race on his shoulders for 27": a masterpiece.
