The climb of Corno alle Scale crowns Jonas Vingegaard once again. The Danish rider conquers the Giro d'Italia stage with an action of strength and tactical intelligence, also achieving an extraordinary symbolic milestone: the fiftieth victory of his professional career.
For the Visma-Lease a Bike champion, this is also his second stage victory at the Giro, a success that confirms his current form and the growing strength of his candidacy for the pink jersey. The race leadership, however, remains on Eulalio's shoulders, with Vingegaard staying just over two minutes back in the general classification. A gap that might seem significant, but far from decisive, especially considering what awaits the peloton after the rest day.
Tomorrow, in fact, the Giro will observe a break before the decisive 42-kilometer time trial from Viareggio to Massa, terrain ideal for the qualities of the two-time Tour de France winner. A long and very fast race against the clock, in which Vingegaard could gain significant seconds on his main rivals.
At the end of the stage, the Danish rider appeared calm at the press conference, aware of the importance of the day he had experienced. «50 victories? Yes, for me they are truly many. So yes, I'm extremely happy. And the second stage is also something special. So yes, in the end it was a good day for us».
Vingegaard then explained the strategy adopted by his team during the stage: «Today we wanted to be a bit more on the defensive. We were already outnumbered and we spent a lot of energy in yesterday's stage. It was a hard stage, so we wanted to approach it more cautiously. Then they pulled hard all day and at the bottom of the final climb we still wanted to impose a high pace because I thought it would be better for me. Then the breakaway came within reach and yes, I'm really happy to have managed to bring home the victory».
In the finale, the Danish rider was able to respond to the decisive attacks, then launching the winning move: «Yes, I mean, they pulled hard all day, so I expected an attack, I'm happy I managed to follow them and then at the end also to attack them and win the stage».
An inevitable look at the general classification and future objectives like the Tour, but without losing concentration on the present: «For now I want to go forward day by day and obviously the next stage is the time trial, so we'll see how it goes there and also how the others perform. But I'll do my best, and obviously if at some point I have a big advantage, then maybe we can start thinking about the Tour de France, but at least in my opinion, we still need to stay focused every day on the Giro and not think about the Tour».
Important words also came for Davide Piganzoli, author of a great performance that ended in third place: «Davide Piganzoli finished third and is proving once again to be a super strong and skilled rider, and he truly deserves today's placement and I'm really impressed by him and how he's performing. So yes, he's a fantastic guy both on and off the bike. He's integrated very well into the team and in general he's simply a great guy».
Looking instead at Tuesday's time trial, Vingegaard made a comparison with the 2022 Tour de France time trial, with similar length, but with more climbs and curves: «Actually, I think the time trial we'll do on Tuesday is quite different from the 2022 Tour de France one, because that one was a bit more hilly, with climbs and descents and curves left and right, while this one on Tuesday is flatter, without many climbs, so yes, it will be different, but obviously I'll do everything possible to get the best time possible».
Finally, the Danish rider also emphasized the positive balance against the other general classification contenders: «I think today we gained another minute on Hindley, so obviously that's positive. It was a good day and I think Felix Gall also proved to be very strong».
