Jonas Vingegaard's Giro d'Italia enters its decisive phase and the Danish rider continues to confirm his role as the great favorite to claim the final pink jersey. After another day spent always in the very front positions of the peloton, the leader of Team Visma - Lease a Bike now prepares for the stage with the finish on the climb of Corno alle Scale, ideal terrain to attempt an assault on the symbol of the Italian stage race.
In yesterday's stage it was Eulalio who ignited the race in the final with a decisive attack on the last slopes. An acceleration that could have put several general classification contenders in difficulty, but not Vingegaard, who appeared once again attentive and in control of the situation. The Dane controlled without being caught off guard, simply managing his rival's effort and confirming the feeling of still having room to spare ahead of the toughest stages.
Meanwhile the two-time Tour de France winner continues to wear the blue jersey, symbol of the lead in the climbers' classification, further proof of his solidity in this first part of the pink race.
At the end of the stage, Vingegaard commented on the day as follows: «I don't know if I raced as if I were the Giro leader. As a team we raced the way we wanted to race and one of our objectives was to stay safe and it wasn't the right day to make a difference, so we know there will still be many stages to come».
The Dane then also spoke about Eulalio's attack which, however, did not cause particular concern: «I wasn't surprised by Eulalio's attack, I mean, he's a strong rider, and especially on short climbs like this one he's very, very strong. So yes, he did good work and earned himself another day in the pink jersey. Today there will be a longer climb and we'll see».
Finally, a look at the general classification and the possibility of claiming the overall title in the coming hours: «I don't know if I'll wear the blue jersey or the pink one at the time trial. I know that in any case it won't be easy to take the pink jersey right away».
The words of the Danish champion tell a story of caution, but also of awareness of having a strong team and improving form. The climb of Corno alle Scale represents another test for the general classification contenders and could change the balance of the Giro. Vingegaard watches, controls and waits for the right moment, and today could be the day of his first pink jersey in this edition of the race.
