Giulio Ciccone's dream of wearing the pink jersey lasted only briefly, but it will nonetheless remain one of the most emotional moments of his career. The Abruzzese experienced his sole day as leader of the Giro d'Italia under extremely harsh conditions, marked by rain, cold, and a stage that brought much of the peloton to its knees.
For Ciccone it was a day to remember and at the same time to forget. The emotion of wearing the Giro d'Italia's symbol for the first time clashed with the reality of a ruthless race and near-winter weather. The Lidl-Trek captain had to relinquish the lead just hours later, but without losing clarity and honesty in his statements after the finish line. "In the end, I think it wasn't the best day to wear my first pink jersey. It was one of the most difficult and nerve-wracking days of my cycling life," Ciccone recounted at the end of the stage.
Images of shivering riders, covered in rain capes and with faces marked by exhaustion, perfectly told the story of the day's harshness. Continuous rain, wind, and low temperatures transformed the race into a true test of survival. "Even with the weather, which at times was really crazy, we had everything: rain, you name it. So I caught a nasty cold and I think you can see it in my face too."
Words that perfectly explain the suffering experienced by the peloton, with many riders arriving at the finish line completely frozen. Ciccone tried to defend the leadership with all his remaining energy, but he also acknowledged his rivals' superiority on such a complicated day. "It was really cold. As I already said yesterday morning, we're here without a team to control and defend this jersey. I would have very much liked to keep it, but it wasn't possible".
Despite the disappointment of losing the pink jersey so quickly, Ciccone wanted to highlight his teammates' work and also pay tribute to Derek Gee, one of the most anticipated riders of this Giro. "We have a very strong team for Johnny (Milan, ed.), so that's how it is. I thanked Gee because he's here with great ambitions and is also helping a lot by providing support and he's really a great guy".
Nevertheless, it remains a special page in Ciccone's career. Even though the pink jersey slipped away quickly, his first day as Giro leader will remain the image of a generous rider, combative and capable of gritting his teeth through one of the toughest stages of this edition.
