CARTAGIRO. THE PRESS REVIEW OF THE GIRO D'ITALIA

GIRO D'ITALIA | 13/05/2026 | 09:00
di Aldo Peinetti

On the front page, the Corriere della Sera "fires" a large photo dedicated to Giulio Ciccone, kissing his pink jersey. There it is, ennobled by the cover of a major newspaper, an image that appears on virtually all other newspapers, a symbol of the soothing effect of that leadership for our two-wheeled sport. Today among readers, participation in Giulio's dream prevails, which forced the Gazzetta to do the math: at 31 years old, after 11 seasons on his shoulders, Ciccone reaches after 150 stages a milestone that "he pursued as if it were the purpose of his career," recalls in his commentary Pier Bergonzi. The Abruzzese hopes to bring the symbol of supremacy to his homeland, as Repubblica reminds us (Ciccone's pink novel, recalled in the headline, has nothing sentimental about it), evoking like the Corsera the irrational emotions that govern the world in the saddle according to Giulio, he who has a Pirate sticker on his bike. Something must mean something; there is a need for these forms of strong and good symbolism. In Il Giornale, Pier Augusto Stagi captures Ciccone's special moment, that third place that can be worth so much. So it was for a rider who "wears almost unexpectedly on a thread, in that mature age that transforms dreams into a sense of duty." Even so, in Calabria, the Lidl Trek captain took the podium. French digressions, finally: for the more distracted, L'Equipe dedicates a page to Mathys Rondel, an emerging French rider in the ranks of Decathlon CMA CGM. Gulp, it's also Paul Seixas's team. And you almost come to fear that our cousins across the Alps have taken us in by dedicating special attention to a rider not so well known around here. Rondel, a name to note.

GAZZETTA DELLO SPORT
CICCONE IN PINK JERSEY AN OSCAR FOR HIS CAREER THERE ARE NO LIMITS TO DREAMS
That kiss to the pink jersey with moist eyes is a manifesto to the beauty of cycling and its characters. The Giro restarts from Calabria with the moving affection that only Southern fans know how to give, and Giulio Ciccone touches the sky with his bike. Third in the sprint won by Ecuadorian Narvaez, in Cosenza, he becomes the first in the general classification in the pink jersey. The Abruzzese, 31 years old and eleven seasons on his shoulders, pursued this milestone as if it were the purpose of his career. He achieved it after 150 stages... that's how many he has raced at the Giro d'Italia since 2016, the year of his debut. (Pier Bergonzi)

CORRIERE DELLA SERA
CICCONE IN PINK JERSEY IT'S THE FIRST FOR ITALY HE'S THE NEW LEADER OF THE GIRO: "I LIVE FOR IRRATIONAL EMOTIONS"
In a sport that measures carbohydrates at dinner with a pharmacist's scale, in the pink jersey goes an Abruzzese boy who for ten years has been racing spending even energy he doesn't have: Giulio Ciccone. Giulio for some generous, for others a spendthrift, Giulio who if a breakaway goes out, he jumps into it without thinking too much, Giulio who can't stay sheltered from the wind (and troubles), Giulio who when he wins throws his glasses to the adoring public not caring about fines and possible disqualifications (Marco Bonarrigo).

REPUBBLICA
CICCONE'S PINK NOVEL, "AT THE FRONT LIKE PANTANI"
The most beautiful third place in the world has given Giulio Ciccone an unexpected horizon, unknown, avoided at the beginning of this Giro: "I'm racing with lightness, without classification worries." But now, for the climber from Chieti something changes: "I want to wear it as long as possible, maybe all the way to my Abruzzo. A land I love, but with which on the bike I've always had to fight." He races with a Pirate sticker on his bike, "I've always had the image of Pantani in the pink jersey in my head, I live on emotions and nothing is like the feeling of being recognized (Cosimo Cito).

IL GIORNALE
A ROSE IN ITALY
The Giro finally on our roads and Ciccone takes the jersey: "The dream of a child that comes true." Stage to Narvaez
The Giro in Italy turns blue with Giulio Ciccone in the pink jersey. There are moments when even a third place can be worth so much, even a few tears. A third place to jump to the lead of the classification and wear that pink jersey you dreamed of as a child and which instead Ciccone wears almost unexpectedly on a thread, in that mature age that transforms dreams into a sense of duty. "It's one of those days when it's hard to find the words – says the Abruzzese rider, already in yellow for two days, on the spot: it was my childhood dream. It came when I least expected it. I want to enjoy it and I dedicate it to all the people who love me. I don't know if it's the end of a journey or the beginning of a new one, but wearing this jersey is something special." (Pier Augusto Stagi)

L'EQUIPE
RONDEL, A PRECISE PLAN
Until now, everything has gone as planned. After the first four stages of the Giro, broadcast by Eurosport and available on L'Equipe, Mathys Rondel has pursued the objective of "not losing time" compared to the leaders, finding himself 10" behind Giulio Ciccone, who yesterday in Cosenza conquered the pink jersey. (Julien Chesnais)

TUTTOSPORT
CICCONE'S JOY, PINK BY CHANCE
If it's not the first time he shows up at the Giro d'Italia without declared classification ambitions, in his 31 years that in December will slip to 32, it's close. Yet, paradoxically (but perhaps not...), Giulio Ciccone just yesterday wore the first pink jersey of his career. Ten years after his debut in the "home" race, seven after wearing yellow at the Tour de France. A "double" that dazzles and enchants, and that well tells of the caliber of the Abruzzese champion: in pink "by chance" (Daniele Galosso)

CORRIERE DELLO SPORT
CICCONE IN THE LEAD
Calabria welcomes back the Giro that returns to Italy and celebrates Giulio Ciccone's first pink jersey. He has pursued it since his first pedal strokes on the roads of his Abruzzo when he was a boy who longed to wear it one day. Last August at Limone Piemonte, the thirty-one-year-old from Chieti of Lidl-Trek caressed his "red cousin," in the Italian start of the Vuelta and from that moment he said he would no longer care about the classification. (Alberto Dolfin)
