The Giro d’Italia has started and Jonas Vingegaard continues to position himself away from the spotlight, both inside and outside the peloton. After the first stage, the Visma-Lease a Bike leader spoke exclusively to Feltet, confirming a now clear approach: minimal media engagement and maximum focus on the race and energy management.
The team has adopted an extremely controlled approach in its relations with the press as well, preferring to avoid unnecessary exposure to maintain complete focus on the competition. A strategy that seems to be perfectly reflected in the way he and the squad are tackling the first stage of the Italian Grand Tour.
«We adopted the tactic of staying in the back, a strategy we’ve already used several times – the Danish rider said outside the team bus – It seems to work very well for us. Especially in the first stage, with wide roads that didn’t present any particular dangers. Even in case of a crash, we would have been able to recover».
Vingegaard and his Visma-Lease a Bike’s choice is a precise tactical decision, one to stay away from the scramble in the front positions of the peloton, especially on a day considered relatively calm for the general classification contenders. Despite the hectic finale, the two-time Tour de France winner described the stage as trouble-free.
«The first stage was a smooth three-and-a-half hour ride. Perhaps only the last ten kilometers weren’t quite so calm».
Speaking to the Danish broadcaster again, the two-time Tour winner recounted the finale, which was very chaotic, with many riders hitting the ground. A serious crash involved several riders in the front positions of the peloton, although Vingegaard wasn’t able to see directly what happened, as he was positioned further back with his teammates.
«I just hope everyone is okay. It looked like a bad crash, but it happened right up front, while I was further back. Probably precisely because of our position in the back, we completed the stage and the team did good work».
Now attention shifts to today’s stage, where the risk could increase significantly. Wind, possible echelons, and a more nervous course could create the first real differences among the general classification contenders. For this reason, Visma-Lease a Bike could continue with the same strategy: protect Vingegaard, avoid unnecessary risks, and always stay in control without wasting energy.
