Marcello Massini, born in 1942, has passed away. A master of cycling in his role as sports director for many years and a mentor in life. A dear friend with whom we shared many years of a different cycling era compared to today's. A mentor whose advice was invaluable even to those of us who write about the sport. We apologize if we cannot recall every moment of a cycling career that was, for Marcello, splendid, brilliant and full of success. His most prestigious victory was the 1995 Giro d'Italia with Giuseppe Di Grande. Among the teams he directed, we remember two in particular: Magniflex and G.S. Grassi. As for the young riders he taught the sport to, instilling in them style and proper conduct, we mention Bartoli, Bettini, Bennati, Balducci, Bettiol, the late Biagini, Guidi, Nocentini, Lelli, Selvaggi, Tafi and many others. And we repeat our apologies to those we have not mentioned. Cycling loses in Marcello what he has been for a lifetime: a great teacher of wisdom not only for athletes, but also for sports directors and all those involved in cycling. To the family and relatives of Marcello Massini, in this sad moment, we express our deepest condolences.
Goodbye, Master.
The funeral of Marcello Massini will take place tomorrow, Sunday, at 3:30 PM at the Cristo Salvatore church in Ponticelli di Santa Maria a Monte in the province of Pisa.
