On the hills of the Marca Trevigiana, at the foot of the Cansiglio Plateau, cycling is an integral part of the social fabric: you can feel it every day. Many teams choose these roads to train or have established their logistical base here. An atmosphere that reaches its peak every year on Easter Monday, when in Villa di Cordignano, a small village nestled among these hills, the appointment with the Giro del Belvedere is renewed after more than a century.
On Monday, April 6th, the "Spring World Championship for Juniors" celebrated its 87th edition with the victory of the most anticipated rider, U23 World Champion Lorenzo Finn. The young Ligurian talent returned to the Easter Monday Classic twelve months later, securing a splendid consecutive double victory unseen for 66 years, since the successes of Claudio Zanchetta in the 1959-1960 biennium. The RedBull-Bora-hansgrohe Rookies rider also raised his arms to the sky while wearing the rainbow jersey, a feat not seen since the days of Gianni Giacomini in 1980.
Framing the event was a day blessed by sunshine and warmth, with an extraordinary crowd that stormed the key points of the course: from the finish area to the Conche, passing through the Montaner, to the climb of Piai della Vigna, the most recent climb but already close to the hearts of enthusiasts. Right on the summit of Piai della Vigna, the gastronomic route "Giro del Buongustare" anticipated the passage of the young champions of world cycling, welcomed with warmth worthy of a mountain stage at the Giro d'Italia or the Tour de France.
A tribute to the efforts of the organizers of Pro Belvedere, protagonists of a small miracle: transforming for one day a center of just under a thousand inhabitants into the world hub of youth cycling.
"We are delighted," declared the organization coordinator, Efren Chies. "Weeks have passed, but we still struggle to shake off the chills and emotions of last April 6th. An edition that rewards us for the enormous amount of sacrifices and work we face throughout the year.
"Ours is a small reality that sets itself great objectives, edition after edition. It's the only way to guarantee the protagonists an organizational level up to the task. In just a few years we've moved from an amateur context to a U23 landscape increasingly close to professionalism. An example? Lorenzo Finn, after racing with us, the Recioto and the Liegi U23, was also a protagonist at the Tour of the Alps, competing on equal terms with riders who will aim for the pink jersey at the next Giro d'Italia. We are aware of how much cycling is changing and every year we work to keep pace."
Record numbers on the web also confirm the success of the event: the social media accounts recorded results of great significance, with 782,000 views on Facebook and 1.1 million on Instagram in the last month, for a total of almost 2 million views across the two platforms. On the YouTube channel, there are 103,000 views and over 1,300 hours of watched content.
"For over a decade we have invested in communication," added Chies, "relying on the experience and professionalism of Vitesse and at the same time trying to build an event around the race. After some editions penalized by bad weather, this year the Giro del Buongustare reached its fullest expression: looking at the images, it seemed like being at the Giro d'Italia. The riders were also struck by the amount of spectators along the roads. Yet these very results push us to insist and not stop: the objective, in the near future, is to bring the images of our event live to the whole world."
