TECHNIPES #INEMILIAROMAGNA. ANSALONI, 1,000 KM OF BREAKAWAY AMONG THE PROS TO CHASE A DREAM

CONTINENTAL | 02/04/2026 | 14:48

There are milestones that are not celebrated on the podium, but that tell more than many victories. During the last edition of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali, which ended on Sunday, March 29, Emanuele Ansaloni has surpassed a symbolic milestone: over 1,000 kilometers of breakaway racing in professional races. Symbolic, yes, but tremendously concrete, because he has covered every single one of those kilometers flat out, facing the wind, sometimes alone, always ahead of the peloton to prove he deserves an opportunity.

The figure is even more significant when you consider that Emanuele Ansaloni, 26 years old for just over a month, Elite category, has never had a professional contract. Yet, when called upon to compete against World Tour and Professional teams, he has never backed down. In fact, he has often been the one leading the way.

He has accumulated many race days among the professionals, and in ten of these days he has covered over 100 kilometers in breakaway: Italian Elite Championship, Trofeo Laigueglia, 2nd stage of the Coppi e Bartali, Giro dell'Appennino and Giro dell'Emilia in 2023; 4th stage of the Coppi e Bartali and GP Industria & Artigianato in 2024; three stages of the Coppi e Bartali in 2026. A track record that many professional cyclists, even established ones, cannot claim.

Every time Ansaloni has gone into a breakaway, his teammates in the peloton have not lost ground. Every time, the jersey of Team Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna Caffè Borbone has appeared in television broadcasts when the cameras were rolling or in the highlights of the first half of the race in delayed coverage. Every time, he has done his job: protect the team, give visibility to sponsors, race with courage.

At the 2026 Settimana Coppi e Bartali he launched into breakaways in three out of five stages. At the end of the last one, from Cormons to Gemona del Friuli, he was awarded on the final podium by Roberto Pella as the most combative rider of the day. He finished the week in second place in the Mountain Points classification. Not bad, in a professional race, for someone who isn't a professional.

Over the years, Ansaloni has won important races: for example Corsanico, Varignana, the general classification of the Aziz Shusha in Azerbaijan. In 2022 he finished third at the Italian U23 Championship in Carnago, behind Germani and Calzoni, with his form on the rise. Three days later he broke his shoulder in a race. He returned the following season, now Elite. But he didn't give up.

Among the professionals, he has sometimes come close. At the 2023 Giro di Sicilia he attacked 2 kilometers from the finish. If he had pulled off the big move, perhaps a career would have changed. But cycling is not an exact science; it is also made of "what ifs." And Ansaloni has collected quite a few of those "what ifs," the last one this past winter, when the team that had promised him a contract and a nice international calendar shut down.

The question, at this point, arises naturally: why hasn't a rider like this found a place in professionalism yet? Ansaloni is not a sprinter who brings many points to the table. He is not a pure classics rider. He is not a lightweight, explosive climber. He is, quite simply, a complete, reliable, generous rider. One who knows when to attack, when to wait, when to sacrifice himself. One who is not afraid of headwinds; quite the opposite. One who knows how to stay in the peloton, but also how to ride up front. No less important, one who knows how to work for the team. One whose teammates respect him for his loyalty and honesty.
In modern cycling, increasingly oriented toward numbers and metrics, toward extraordinary performances at the youngest possible age, there is a risk of losing sight of riders like Emanuele Ansaloni. Riders who build value, who read the race, who work for the team without ever shirking. Even when energy is at its limit. Even when the cameras haven't yet captured them, or are capturing others.

«To be honest,» explains Emanuele Ansaloni, «I had never thought about it: 1,000 km in breakaway seems like little compared to what we do in training, but in racing it's an incredible number. It's never easy to go into a breakaway, because the peloton doesn't always give you space: sometimes it takes a whole hour at full gas, flat out, just to get into the right move of the day. But this is my way of racing, what I enjoy most: attacking, trying to surprise. Often it's not enough to win, but it always helps my teammates behind to stay covered in the peloton, so I always try to seize opportunities, or create them for myself. I don't know where this road will take me, but when I'm in a breakaway the sensations are unique».

With Team Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna Caffè Borbone, a Continental team founded in 2019 from an idea by Davide Cassani and chaired by Gianni Carapia, Ansaloni made his debut among the Under 23s and has continued his career at the Elite level as well. Under the guidance of sports directors Francesco Chicchi, Michele Coppolillo, Mauro Calzoni and Andrea Gallo, with Gian Luca Giardini as project manager, he has always stood out as a breakaway rider and as a reference point for his teammates.

«Lele made his debut among the U23s in the year the team was born,» explains the team's management, «and from the start he earned appreciation for his human qualities, in addition to becoming the rider with the most victories in the team's history. Growing year after year, he has always proven to be a point of reference for his teammates, both on the road and off it, so much so that today he is almost a sports director on the bike».

One thousand kilometers of breakaway. Ten days spent pedaling for over one hundred kilometers ahead of the peloton. Three stages in breakaway in the latest edition of the Coppi e Bartali. Stronger than leg pain. And then a second place in the Mountain Points and an award for combativeness that is worth more than other achievements. And still no professional contract.

The question, at this point, is not whether Emanuele Ansaloni deserves an opportunity. Because yes, he would deserve an opportunity. The question is: is there a Professional team willing to give him a chance?

Because professionalism cannot be just a selection of the strongest. It is also a sport that rewards the irrational madness of those who are not afraid to go against the wind, in a stubborn and contrary direction.

There are riders who know how to generate value over time, with human qualities that can make them team players that their teammates don't want to lose. Emanuele Ansaloni is ready. All that's missing is someone to give him the right jersey to wear.
