At the Trofeo Laigueglia, Antonio Tiberi delivered another high-quality performance. Together with his teammate and eventual winner Santiago Buitrago, the twenty-four-year-old from Lazio executed his race perfectly, making the decisive moves in a race that he finished in third place, bringing his tally to five top-3 finishes this season—a figure already surpassing what he achieved throughout the entire 2025.
Tiberi, therefore, after his second-place finish overall (with a stage victory) at the UAE Tour, has essentially confirmed that he is in excellent form and that, thanks to it, stringing together this type of result and putting his mark on races are operations that are coming to him with great ease.
In the first Italian classic of the year, the Italian rider born in 2001 demonstrated all of this by deciding to get serious from the first lap of the Colla Micheri circuit where, supported by Buitrago, he laid the groundwork to launch Bahrain-Victorious toward the impressive conquest of two podium positions.
"I have to say it was a really excellent race on our part, concluded with Buitrago's victory and my third place," Tiberi stated to our microphones after the finish. "We exploded the race, set a good pace in the final laps, and both of us, confirming the good condition we're in, had excellent sensations, which is obviously a great thing with Tirreno coming up. Overall, we couldn't have come home with a better result than this," continued the satisfied best young rider of the 2024 Giro d'Italia before explaining how he and his Colombian teammate divided responsibilities.
"We started with me as leader and Santiago as co-leader, but we decided that during the race, to determine what tactics to adopt, we would assess how our legs felt. When we attacked the final circuit, Santiago set a really excellent pace, I was feeling very good, and so already entering the second lap we found ourselves alone with Gregoire, who held on admirably. On the second lap, Santiago again climbed at a really strong pace, and then on the last lap, seeing the excellent condition he was in, I told him 'I'll try to attack, let's see what happens and then, if needed, you counterattack,' and that's what we did. Gregoire struggled a bit, and at that point, Santiago delivered the decisive blow, taking the margin that then increased on the descent".
For him and his team, the Trofeo Laigueglia therefore ended in triumph, but since appetite comes with eating, there will soon be new opportunities to make their mark by exploiting their excellent current condition. Specifically, both Tiberi and Buitrago will head to the Tirreno-Adriatico, an appointment for which Bahrain-Victorious has decided to leave nothing to chance.
"Santiago will go test a stage of the Giro tomorrow, I'm heading down to Tuscany this evening where I'll scout the Tirreno stage that features a short gravel section at the end, and then we'll meet up at the hotel where the team will be staying for the Strade Bianche before moving together to Viareggio for the start of the Race of the Two Seas," Tiberi revealed, ready to give his best despite the course, in his opinion, not favoring him much.
"Winning won't be easy because the opponents are very strong, and unfortunately because the route, having no difficult climbs (which wouldn't even be that hard to find and insert into a Tirreno held in central Italy), isn't really perfectly suited to me, but we'll see if we can do our best anyway," concluded the native of Frosinone with determination.
