After the departure of Tim Heemskerk, coach of Jonas Vingegaard and Matteo Jorgenson, Bjarne Riis has returned to speak about Visma-Lease a Bike, and not in a positive way. The former rider and Danish sports director did not mince words, questioning the entire communication of Visma-Lease a Bike: "The annoying thing for us, when it comes to Jonas, is that we never receive any communication from the Visma team about how he is really doing - he said in an interview with Danish television - We are always dealing with the same problem. Moreover, we have not been informed about how his accident occurred and its real consequences".
Vingegaard announced that he will not start the UAE Tour after being involved in a training accident on January 26th, when he fell due to an amateur cyclist who had positioned himself on his wheel.
According to Riis, the information received from the team so far is incomplete and offers absolutely no real indication of what happened and what damages were caused. Additionally, it is also recent news that Heemskerk, the Danish rider's coach, has left the Visma-Lease a Bike team.
Riis clearly stated that he would have handled the situation differently, communicating transparently what happened to Jonas and what is happening within the team. A response from Visma-Lease a Bike did not take long to arrive, and the reply to Riis came through the team's press officer, Emile Vaessen: "We constantly share openly and transparently what we know at the moment. These are simply the information we have now". Another response that clarifies nothing and leaves many doubts about communication management.
"Jonas' condition depends entirely on how much he has trained after the injury and illness - Riis continued -. We should know how much time he had to recover and how good his physical condition was before the accident. We still need to get answers to these questions. So we can say that we don't know much, but I'm not too worried about what he will do in the coming months".
Visma-Lease a Bike, through a comment by technician Niermann, said that Vingegaard will achieve his best result at the Tour de France and not the Giro d'Italia, not due to physical form or preparation, but because the Tour is the Danish rider's main objective. In this case too, the statements about the preparation of the two-time Tour winner appeared incomplete.
Riis concluded his interview by talking about another of his compatriots, Mads Pedersen, who fell during the Valenciana race. The situation of the Lidl-Trek rider worries Riis more, and he thinks that the spring Classics have been partially compromised and does not expect to see Pedersen at his best for Milan-Sanremo. "It will be tough for Sanremo, so the Tour of Flanders and Roubaix will probably give him more strength. But it's hard to say at this point, and we need to see how his recovery proceeds, not so much for the shoulder but for the wrist".
