The Swiss flag flies over the Muscat Classic thanks to Mauro Schmid. The Swiss national champion won by beating Adam Yates of UAE Emirates XRG in an uncontested sprint, while Luke Plapp completed the great day for Team Jayco AlUla by securing third place. Thirteen seconds behind, Christian Scaroni claimed fourth place, regulating the group's front runners.
THE RACE. The Muscat Classic kicked off the six days of racing that will animate Oman until February 11th. Born in 2023, the opening classic of the Omani event was an excellent appetizer for many athletes who started their season today. The course is practically identical to previous editions, 176.2 km from Muscat to Al Bustan, with a far from simple route. After the first 90 km almost completely flat, the group tackled the Jabal Road climb before entering the final circuit with the Al Jissah and Al Kabir climbs and a double pass through the finish line.
Most of the race was characterized by the attack of Baptiste Veistroffer, the French Lotto Intermarchè rider who started immediately after the official start and managed to gain up to 5'30" over the group. About 50 km from the finish, with the start of the final circuit, the pace definitely increased and the peloton began to lose riders. On the first ascent of Jissah, many sprinters raised the white flag. The group came back together 23 km from the finish, and on the second pass of the Jissah climb, Adam Yates launched his attack, followed only by the Jayco AlUla duo of Luke Plapp and Mauro Schmid. The two divided their tasks, with Plapp keeping the breakaway alive and the Swiss champion focused on the sprint, which he then won without contest.
