The new year, just begun, does not diminish or attenuate, for those who had the opportunity, indeed the fortune, to know him, the affectionate memory of a person, never a character despite having all the credentials. We are talking about Professor Giovanni Tredici, the "Prof" par excellence of the pink race with his incredibly efficient structure, which he led with professional elegance and with very valid long-standing collaborators who assisted him, from 1982 until his passing, in his role as head of the medical service for the Giro d'Italia and other "Gazzetta" races.
Pier Augusto Stagi, director of TBW, drew a successful and affectionate portrait in the attached link published after the Prof's passing in September 2025, at the age of 81.
Giovanni Tredici now rests in the family tomb at the cemetery of Coarezza, in the municipality of Somma Lombardo, in the province of Varese, in the Ticino area that marks the border with Piedmont.
His son Stefano, also a doctor like his father, sent us the photo reproduced here during the exchange of greetings. And, as they say on radio and TV, we'll hand over the line by faithfully reporting the comment that accompanied the WhatsApp on Christmas Day 2025.
"I found this photo today. I had never seen or noticed it with a dedication to me. He was my idol, my dad. Mom and I would wait for him at the finish of amateur races. He was a disaster... (literally). But he loved it too much. He started there. Later, the G.S. Enervit Coarezza was founded. I raced with them until juniors before moving to Biancorossi of Gazzada".
We resume the line.
The "Modoetia", a name derived from the Latin name of the capital of Brianza, Monza, is a society with a long cycling tourism tradition that also organized a classic in the sector like the Monza-Castellania and other cycling tours. And Giovanni Tredici was a true lover of bicycles and cycling, which he then passed on to his son Stefano.
We had several opportunities to see him engaged, in action nearby, following amateur races in a vehicle trailing the group, a position that the Prof presided over with a certain consistency not without pride in pedaling in homage to the dictates of De Coubertin.
And also, by chance, to encounter dad Giovanni and son Stefano, engaged in a sort of family Trofeo Baracchi, a couple of times many years ago, along the roads of the "buen retiro" of Coarezza, in the suggestive tangle of roads, waters, and canals, in the area of the Panperduto dam, an important hydraulic junction where the Villoresi canal also originates, and Somma Lombardo.
And the silhouettes, seen from behind, proposed the same style of riders with a powerful physical build. Passion from father to son, with an accentuated aversion to elevation changes.
Thank you for everything, Prof.
