Italy is calling Wout van Aert: after the Omloop Nieuwsblad, he will return to the start of Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo. "I want to seize every opportunity that presents itself - Van Aert said at the team's media day - I'm happy to race these Italian races again".
After the two Italian classics, the thirty-one-year-old Van Aert's road program will continue with the races he loves most: the Tour of Flanders (April 5) and Paris-Roubaix (April 12). The April Classics will be the main objective of the entire season.
"In spring, I want to be ready from Omloop Nieuwsblad to Roubaix: I want to show my talent everywhere and seize every opportunity that presents itself. Unlike previous seasons, I will be back at the start of the Italian classics Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo. After my victory in Siena during the last Giro, I realized that Strade Bianche, despite the route changes, still suits my abilities well. I think Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo are among the best races of the season, so I definitely don't want to miss them".
Van Aert loves Italy, but the Flanders and Roubaix in the Flemish heart occupy a special place.
"Of course, the Monument races like the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and Milan-San Remo remain the main objectives of the season, but all the other races I participate in will also be important to me".
Words of praise also came from the sports director Niermann: "Wout has never made a secret of his dream of winning Paris-Roubaix or the Tour of Flanders" - commented Grischa Niermann - "It would be fantastic for him and for us if he could realize this dream. With our goal of winning a Monument Classic, it is logical that Wout is at the start of Milan-San Remo. With him, we have an extra card as a team to compete for victory".
Van Aert should also participate in the Vuelta a España and could attempt to reclaim the green jersey he lost due to withdrawal in 2024, when he also won three stages.
The Belgian is working hard for his return after the ankle fracture suffered at the Zilvermeercross in Mol. The Flemish rider underwent surgery, which was successfully completed the day after the fall, and yesterday he was seen back in the saddle.
