20-year-old Mackenzie Coupland won the Australian road championship for elite and U23 categories by crossing the finish line alone in Perth after 108 kilometers of racing. Behind the athlete who was promoted to the WorldTour Liv AlUla Jayco team this year were her teammate Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Neve Bradbury, a 23-year-old rider from CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto.
Coupland, already bronze medalist in the U23 time trial, built her success during the final lap when, breaking away from the group, she caught and dropped Josie Talbot (Liv AlUla Jayco) who until that moment had been leading the race together with Katelyn Nicholson (Butterfields Ziptrak Racing) and Ruby Taylor (Prolongo Al-Andalus Woman).
Native of Kalamunda, about 100 kilometers from Perth, Coupland succeeds Lucinda Stewart in the honor roll.
Mackenzie Coupland's words: "It was a good race, we managed all situations. In the finale, I tried to bring back Josie and then went straight to the finish line. It's truly fantastic to win this jersey. I made some mistakes during the race, it's true, but I hope I made my teammates proud with this victory. I'm very happy."
